Sauce Gardner vs Calvin Austin

Recommended Posts

It’s tough covering those small, quick Tyreek type receivers. He did well considering the multiple moves.
Hopefully he (and Hall) will be able to lineup against the bigger deep threat receivers we face this year (Claypool/Pickens, Higgins/Chase, Sutton/Patrick, Devante Parker, DPJ, Bateman and Lazard/Watkins).

This leaves DJ Reed and MC2 to cover the small/quick receivers. Only issue is Reed plays best at LCB. Teams can always get the matchup they want.

Calvin Austin is a beast, no one should be taking him for granted against any college corner. Part of the problem is that guys of his body type don't translate to the NFL, so his name isnt mentioned as much as some other guys...but he can ball.

Wasn't that his freshman year vs a Juco transfer upper class man?

Is there any tape of him struggling vs smaller receivers last year?

Austin was at Memphis for 4 years not a juco transfer.

The highlights are from 2020 (no fans in stands) when he went for 7 for 121 (0 TDs) against Cincy.  Austin was a redshirt Junior, Gardner was a true Soph.

Cincy didn't play Memphis in 2021

I would be surprised if the Jets coaching staff schemes up a defense where Gardner's primary responsibility will be to follow a small shifty receiver like Austin over the course of the whole game.

Yeah,I think this responsibility would fall to MC2.
