Why did Sam Darnold fail to develop into a good NFL QB?

Maccaganan apparently never watched that game or ignored it. 

Instead, he placed total confidence in having scouted him live in LA and sensing the "positive vibes" around Sammy on the sidelines.  And after all, Sam's USC teammates "loved him".  Definitely worth dealing 3 2nd round picks to move up 3 spots for the possibility of drafting.

An even greater indictment is that Macc didn't even know who was going to be there at 3 when the deal was made. He was totally cool with letting fate pick for him. He was ambivalent whether it was Baker Darnold or Rosen. 

He never would've taken Allen because he still had PTSD from Hackenberg and Allen was facially-similar as a prospect coming out.

If Giants took Darnold or traded out to someone who did, he 100% would've taken Rosen. And then every single Darnold excuse would've been made for Rosen verbatim (except perhaps "but he's a nice boy") for 3 years because we all know Jets wouldn't have dumped him after a year like the Cards did.

And let's face it, would Allen or Jackson really succeed with the roster Macc built? Probably not. Even if you acknowledge that Darnold just sucks, and his supporting cast couldn't have helped, Macc proved that the cast can make it all worse. Jets were screwed no matter who they took.

the point of taking a franchise QB high is that they don't need a perfect roster to win games. They are the franchise QB 

Yes Jackson and Allen would be better draft picks because they are better players. Would they have met their full potential? maybe not but better than Sam Darnold to be sure. 

the best move would have been to stick at 6, take Quenton Nelson who everyone knew was a 10 year All Pro and keep the 3 2nd round picks

This gets dismissed so often around here and its infuriating.  

Teams who draft QBs high tend to be bad teams.  If those QB's are the goods, that doesn't seem to matter a whole lot.  Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Kyler Murray....all QB's who were drafted high by bad teams who have found success.  

Franchise QBs make their teams better.  If they need to enter great circumstances to find success, then they're not franchise QB's.  At best, guys like those are game managers, and no one should be advocating using a top 5 or 10 pick on a game manager.
