Are the Jets really a "Young Team" anymore?

Recommended Posts

This is to not say they are an "old team" but keep hearing at each PC "how young" the team is, but a closer look at the revamped roster makes you question this as more of coach speak. Plenty of experience on this team to get the job done.

WR's - WR 1 Corey Davis 6th season, WR 2 E Moore 2nd season, Slot, Berrios 5th season

TE- 1) Uzomah 8th season 2) Conklin 5th season

Defensive Line unit - JFM 5th year, Q Williams 4th season, Rankins 7th season, Lqwson 6th Season

Age is a concrete metric.  Add up years of NFL experience and divide by number of players total.

Could do it just for expected starters, or for all players, etc.

But yes, I believe the math would show we are in fact a young team when compared to other NFL teams calculations.

But someone would need to do the maths the truly validate such a claim.

Yes I heard on the radio that we will likely have the youngest roster in the NFL when all is said and done.

To me, you're a young team if your "core talent" at, primarily, premium positions is also young.  A team with a 36-year old QB, 32-year old WR1, 34-year old LT and 30-year old EDGE rusher is "old" even if they have surrounded those guys with a bunch of young talent, because they have to replace all their "core" pieces soon.  Conversely, having a bunch of 1-year, aging rentals at non-premium positions doesn't automatically make a team "old".

The Jets "core" (we hope) and their ages when Week 1 arrives:

  • QB:  Zach Wilson (23)
  • WR:  Elijah Moore (22)
  • WR:  Garrett Wilson (22)
  • OT:  Mekhi Becton (23)
  • G:  Laken Tomlinson (30)
  • G:  Alijah Vera-Tucker (23)
  • EDGE:  Carl Lawson (27)
  • EDGE:  Jermaine Johnson (23)
  • DT:  John Franklin-Myers (25)
  • DT:  Quinnen Williams (24)
  • CB:  Sauce Gardner (22)
  • CB:  D.J. Reed (25)

Plus, even though RB's don't last in this league, you can also throw in Breece Hall (21) and Michael Carter (23) if you'd like.

So, yes, I'd say we have a young team.

Are we counting by age or by seasons?  We have a few 'old' rookies which skew things a bit.

Last year, I think we were the youngest team by some measures.  Not sure which.  I think we've moved a bit more towards the league average this year with the additions of the TEs and the DBs and now Kwon.

Yes

How are they not?

Every single player that could even remotely be considered a cornerstone piece on this team is below the age of 25 with the lone exceptions of maybe Lawson and Mosley, who is pretty much as good as gone after this season anyway.

Zach, Hall, Quinnen, Sauce, AVT, Carter, G. Wilson, Moore, JJ, Ruckert, Becton (if his head and gut are in check)…all under the age of 25. Even 23 in most instances.

I’d never be confused with someone who blindly blows this stupid, silly team at every turn. But this is still the best overall collection of young talent I’ve seen on the Jets in at least a decade, minimum.

Because the team is still young at core positions..

QB - Wilson

RB - Hall and Carter

WRs - Wilson and Moore

T/G - Becton and AVT

CB - Sauce, Carter, Echols

Pass rusher - J.J.

This!

The real question is whether a team is reliant on its older guys and needing them for many more years?  The Jets clearly aren't dependent on older players trying to hang on.  All of the important pieces are really young.

Guys like Mosley, Uzomah, McGovern, Rankins, Corey Davis, etc. who skew the average age higher are all guys the Jets are looking to move on from either next year or in the next couple years.

Contrast that with teams who are heavily reliant on aging players like Aaron Rodgers, Travis Kelce, Derrick Henry, Tom Brady, Keenan Allen, etc.  Guys who clearly have fewer years ahead of them than behind them, and have already played the best football they'll ever play in the NFL.

The important players that are the heart of this franchise Going forward (or at least we hope so) are all young.

QB- Wilson

RB- Hall/Carter

WR- Moore/Wilson

OL- Becton/AVT

DL- Q/Jermaine

DB- Sauce

The success of this franchise and JD are tied to these guys and not Fant/Lawson/Conklin/CJ/Davis. if those vets play great but the young guys suck this franchise is in trouble. If the young guys all blossom, then this franchise is in GREAT shape regardless of how the vets play this year.

this. It's absurd to suggest otherwise.

In fact, the Jets adding some leather to bottom half of the roster is the first sensible thing they've done in a decade.

The playmakers and faces of the team are still tiger beat age. We young.
