San Diego Padres agree to trade for Washington Nationals slugger Juan Soto, sources say

The San Diego Padres have agreed to a deal to acquire superstar outfielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell from the Washington Nationals, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

In return, the Nationals are getting a package from the Nationals that includes left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, outfielder Robert Hassell III, shortstop C.J. Abrams, outfielder James Wood, right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana and another major league player.

Soto, a two-time All-Star and the winner of this year's Home Run Derby, is considered the prize of Tuesday's trade deadline and is hitting .246 this season with 21 home runs and 46 RBIs. He was one of the few pivotal pieces remaining from Washington's 2019 title team.

Soto, who is eligible to become a free agent after the 2024 season, turned down a 15-year, $440 million extension offer from the Nationals in mid-July, sources told ESPN, that would have been the largest contract in baseball history.

He is batting .291 with 119 home runs and 358 RBIs in his five seasons with the Nationals, who own the majors' worst record at 35-69 and have lost four of five games through Monday.

Crushing as a fan.  Just crushing. :(

A generational talent.  Yet another generational talent lost by the Nats.

Watching the downfall of this team after the title in 2019 has just been tough.

We are the worst team in MLB right now.

Tough day.  Tough.

We don't have a single good player right now.  Not one.  The entire franchise is now as talentless as the Gase-era Jets.  Worse even.

You received a plethora of talent in this trade. You restock your entire system with what went down today. There was no way you were going to resign Soto… Nat’s owners don’t have that kind of coin. Better to load up now and be ready in 25 then watch his value diminish every year.

Sounds like they're going the Marlins' route.  The Marlins won a couple of World Series that way though.  And the Nats are willing to spend (15 for $440?!)

I feel your pain. Reminds me of Seaver for Pat Zachary, Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson and Dan Norman.Or as fellow Dead Heads, Pigpen for Keith and Donna Godchaux.?

Pigpen is great but I love the Donna and Keith era. And Tom Constanten was their best (musically speaking) on keys, imo.

Post-Keith (from Brent Mydland on) is when their music started going downhill, imo.

This team won't be ready by 25.  At the major league level we have almost nothing.  Ruiz maybe?  Garcia at 2B if he ever learns how to field?  That's it, nothing else at the top level is a future piece.

So we have a few extra lottery tickets to replenish one of the worst farm systems in Baseball.  And a few lodestone/albatross long term contracts for pitchers who suck (Corbin) or may never throw another pro pitch (Stras).

We're a train wreck.  Thinking about 2026 (maybe) or later is not comforting.

Maybe in a few days, but today we just traded a guy comparable to a 23 year old Ted Williams.  For nothing of real use today.

Sorry, not going to feel better just yet.

If a team trades a 23 year old all-star with 3 years left of control they probably shouldn't have a franchise or be forced to sell....also most of these minor leaguers don't pan out it's not like trading for 5 or 6 1st rounders in the NFL draft.
