New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh warned fans that with the talent on this team they’ll have to cut some good football players in training camp.

We are already seeing that come to fruition as the Pittsburgh Steelers swiped pass rusher Hamilcar Rashed Jr off of waivers, according to the NFL’s transaction report.

The Jets had released the former Oregon State product earlier this week.

A Golden Opportunity

Rashed Jr originally joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 class.

The 24-year-old was unable to lock down a spot on the final 53-man roster, but he did enough to impress the coaching staff to land a precious practice squad spot.

Despite his youth and impressive physical gifts, it was going to be even more difficult to crack the roster this offseason for the Jets. Not only do they possess all of the talented players that beat out Rashed last year, but they added even more pieces to the puzzle.

In a way, the Jets really did the young man a solid. By releasing him in early August, they gave him an opportunity to earn his way onto another NFL team’s roster.

Rashed Jr will join a talented Steelers team that is known for its defensive prowess.

This is a brave new world for the Jets. They have a ton of talent at several key positions prior to the official roster cuts coming through.

With that several NFL teams are already circling one Jets drive like a vulture about to strike its prey. Those teams are inevitably waiting for Gang Green to cut that talent so they can come and swipe it away.

Although keep an eye out for the potential of trades as we get closer to the end of August. A strategy that a lot of teams will employ is trading off a player you plan on cutting anyway.

The benefit for the Jets is obvious, get something for the player you’ll lose for nothing anyway. While for the other team, by trading a lower pick they can secure the player’s services without having to play the waiver wire game. Essentially by pulling the trigger on a trade they can cut the line for a minimal cost.

We Have Ourselves a Party

It was a busy day for several former members of the Jets on the NFL’s transaction wire.

Linebacker Brandon Copeland and pass rusher Ronald Blair both had a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens.

Speaking of the Ravens, that will be the opening opponent for the green and white in 2022. Baltimore is considered one of the rare few to be Super Bowl contenders heading into this season.

Which makes it no surprise that they’re an overwhelming favorite against the Jets in every single regard. Las Vegas has the Ravens as a six-point favorite on the road and the ESPN FPI (football power index) analytics gives Baltimore a 73.5 percent chance of coming away with the dub.

A former Jets pass rusher, Jeremiah Attaochu earned a workout with the Arizona Cardinals.

Last but certainly not least, longtime Jets cornerback Darryl Roberts got a tryout with the San Francisco 49ers.

Umm When was he released? was it for the OT they brought in?

Getty The New York Jets have released edge rusher Hamilcar Rashed Jr.

Reeling off the news of, potentially, another long-term injury to former first-round offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, the New York Jets have been stocking up on offensive linemen.

Keep in mind that the franchise also lost backup OT Conor McDermott for “one to two weeks” during the August 6th Green & White Scrimmage, and left tackle George Fant has been limited all summer as he recovers from his offseason knee surgery. To sum up the past 12 hours, things have gone from nervy to full-on panic mode in Jets land and the recent additions reflect that.

Chris Glaser Joins Benenoch

Last night, it was reported that Gang Green had signed versatile veteran Caleb Benenoch. This morning, the organization confirmed that acquisition while also revealing that rookie guard Chris Glaser would be joining him.

“Glaser (6-4, 306) signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia in 2022,” team reporter Ethan Greenberg informed. “He was an honorable mention on Pro Football Network’s All-America team last season after starting 12 games at guard for the Cavaliers. He had 44 starts in college and helped UVA finish third in the country [in] total offense (518.8 yards per game) and second in passing (392.6 yds/g). He played both right and left guard for the Wahoos.”

Charles Goldman of The Chiefs Wire described Glaser: “A three-star recruit out of Solon High School in Solon, Ohio, Glaser had offers from nearly a dozen different schools including Cincinnati, Toledo, Iowa State and Syracuse… By the 2019 college football season, he was UVA’s starter at the right guard position. His best year undoubtedly came in 2021 as a super senior, when he helped Virginia set single-season school records in total offense and passing offense.”

Greenberg also provided more information on Benenoch: “Benenoch (6-5, 305) spent last season with the [New Orleans] Saints and started one game. He was originally drafted by the [Tampa Bay] Buccaneers in the fifth round in 2016 out of UCLA and spent three full seasons in Tampa Bay before he was released in September 2019. He appeared in 35 games (22 starts) with the Bucs. Benenoch was a part of four teams in ’19 – the [New England] Patriots, [Carolina] Panthers, [Dallas] Cowboys and [Detroit] Lions and rejoined the Pats in 2020. He’s taken 1,385 career snaps.”

Both of these moves should be considered depth additions, not Becton replacements, to be clear. That signing could still be on the way in the form of veteran Duane Brown.

General manager Joe Douglas told WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” that the “wheels are in motion” on a Brown signing on August 9. Depending on Becton’s long-term prognosis, the Jets may continue to bring in new offensive linemen in the coming weeks.

2 Former UDFAs Become Early Casualties

With two players entering the scene, two players must of course exit it. The Jets announced those two casualties would be 2021 undrafted prospects Parker Ferguson and Hamilcar Rashed Jr.

The depth offensive lineman, Ferguson, did not play last season and spent the majority of his rookie year on the injured reserve. He had college experience at both tackle and guard during his time with Air Force.

Rashed is the bigger name here. The pass rusher became a bit of a fan favorite during the preseason period last summer. He did not have the same impact this year.

The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt recently listed Rashed as a longshot to make the roster, noting that he has not “stood out” at training camp. The Oregon product was also dealt an unfortunate hand after the Jets brought in several edge rushers this offseason.

Rashed did play 16 defensive snaps as a rookie in Week 10, logging one tackle and one catch allowed. He had impressed against the New York Giants in August of 2021, with 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits.

Replaced Jets Draft Pick ‘Scorching Hot’ at Training Camp

Getty New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has his eye on all 90 players at training camp.

We all know the narrative by now, the 2020 New York Jets draft class has failed.

Embarking on his first true offseason alongside ex-head coach Adam Gase, general manager Joe Douglas had his worst batch of selections to this point. There were plenty of potential reasons why — the pandemic limiting scouting, lack of experience, drafting for a different coaching staff, or just poor luck in the case of a prospect like Cameron Clark.

The results have improved under the Robert Saleh regime, however, and it feels like the Jets leadership pairing is finally thinking as one. Having said that, what do we make of this 2020 class that has mostly been discarded or replaced?

For now, Saleh is urging them to do the only thing they can do — compete.

Zuniga Is Answering the Bell

One 2020 prospect has undoubtedly shown up at training camp this summer, former third-round defensive end Jabari Zuniga. To the surprise of fans and media members alike, the pass rusher has been getting to the quarterback often despite limited opportunities.

Zuniga had two sacks on August 8, bulking his current camp numbers to four sacks in August. ESPN’s Rich Cimini and The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt detailed each of the four big moments so far, which have come against all three quarterbacks (two against Joe Flacco).

Associated Press beat reporter Dennis Waszak Jr. also named the Florida product as an “under-the-radar” Jet that has “flashed” throughout the first couple of weeks of practices.

The unexpected “scorching hot” stretch from Zuniga has created a “good problem” according to Rosenblatt, but is it too little too late for the failed draft pick that has already been cut in 2021 and replaced in 2022?

Does Zuniga Have Any Shot at Making the Roster?

A year ago, Zuniga might have made the 53-man roster if he had shown this type of promise. Now the odds of him doing so are slim after Douglas and Saleh stacked up depth at the edge rusher position.

The Jets just cut once-promising UDFA Hamilcar Rashed Jr. on August 9 for the same reason and it’s very difficult to see where Zuniga fits into this crowded room. Here are the other contenders:

Carl Lawson (roster lock).

John Franklin-Myers (roster lock).

Jermaine Johnson II (roster lock).

Micheal Clemons (near-roster lock).

Jacob Martin (also has four sacks in camp and was brought in during free agency, good chance of making the roster).

Bryce Huff (went undrafted in 2020 but has outplayed Zuniga at every turn, not a lock to make the roster, however).

Vinny Curry (staff favorite that has been sidelined with injury, roster spot in doubt).

Tim Ward (on a similar level as Zuniga but has done less in camp).

Bradlee Anae (unlikely to make the roster, practice squad candidate).

Including Zuniga, that’s 10 solid pass rushers and a max of maybe six 53-man roles, if even. Barring injury, that means the former third-rounder would probably have to beat out players like Huff and Curry for the final roster spot.

During a 90-man breakdown on The Athletic, Rosenblatt did list Zuniga as “on the bubble” with Curry, while putting Ward and Anae as “longshots.” He also concluded that if cut, the former Florida Gator could be claimed off waivers this time around:

The Jets are deep at defensive end, so one or both of these players will likely be cut — and likely claimed or picked up by another team. Curry was off to a nice start before hurting his hamstring and missing a handful of practices, it’s unclear when he’ll return. Zuniga had a practice-ending sack one day in 11-on-11, and another sack a few days later. Curry would be the favorite here if one of them makes the team.

I seem to remember that he had double digit sacks one year in college but I can't remember ever seeing him make a play for the Jets, even in the preseason.
