Its between Barry Sanders and Jim Brown.  No one else (even Sweetness) is particularly close.

You could take both players in their prime, put them in the league today, and they would completely dominate just as much if not more than they did back then.

I would take Payton over Sanders.  What about Campbell?  His issue is the shorter career, but Campbell could have walked on a field in any era and dominated.

After Jim Brown, I think O.J was the greatest back of all time. Why.  Old Rich Stadium was the worst field to run on considering his style of running. That's why a lot of people we're telling him not to sign there. Even if he really didn't have a choice.

Folks truly don't understand just how DOMINANT OJ was.  Unfortunately his only known these days by his ex-wifes murder.     The Juice was better than majority of names on that list.   His 2,000 yard season in a era when defenses could practically take your head off, was still perhaps the greatest single season a running back has ever had.

I will agree with this.  There are not many guys that can lay a true claim to #1 overall.  Payton, OJ, Sanders.  Brown.  I would add Campbell, but I think his career was a bit short for true #1 status.  

There are plenty of great backs.  Plenty that you can win a title with, but anybody that thinks Curtis Martin, Frank Gore, or Tiki Barber is on a level with those guys is nuts.

I was at the game where he broke 2000. Last game of the season at Shea. He needed 197 yards and got 200. Joe Ferguson threw for 70 that day. Sucked seeing the Jets lose (again), but even back then I knew I was watching history. 
 
If only I could’ve seen Jim Brown live, who should’ve been in this poll.
