The Defense is in rough shape

Recommended Posts

The rotation on the dline makes no sense unless it’s to compensate for players not being in shape which would also be on the coaches. Secondary has been awful overall with too many communication lapses. Gardner is a liability as a tackler and teams will attack him. The video resume he put out there against the Browns was a tough watch.

The rotation makes sense. It's just...they're not very good lol. Haven't seen much with Gardner being a liability? Something specific stand out?

The rotation would make sense if they were good lol. Condensing the rotation to get your better players on the field would be the corrective measure. Such as the 4th pick in the draft playing more than 35 snaps or whatever it was.

As far as Gardner goes, you watched the 22. Watch any Chubb carry.

Here you’ll see Joyner and Gardner making a business decision:

Aright, the all-22 on game pass is finally available and I watched some of this defense and phew boy, it's gonna be a long season unless things tighten up.

-Bunch of communication issues, all over not just in the secondary. You figure that with so many new pieces and rookies. It's gonna happen but gotta fix it sooner than later.

-The interior pass rush is horrific. Zero push when Quinnen is out. Rankins, Soloman Thomas, and Shepherd isn't getting it done. Ideally, you'd like to find a legit pass rusher and kick JFM inside permanently. Either way, sorry to say, but Defensive Tackle is a big priority for this team.

-Lawson needs to step it up. But hard to tell this game with how quick Brissett was getting the ball out.

-Tony Adams got put in a blender on one play, opening up for a huge first down.

-They have no idea how to execute a stunt properly. Several times I've watched them run into each other and go nowhere.

-Whitehead is pretty all over the place when it comes to coverage. Great run defender. But with that big hitter mentality comes over pursuing and puts him out of position often.

So, overall...not sure if a lot of out of positioning was due to coaching, just bad players or them being overly worried about the run game (which I actually think was a big part of it). It'll be interesting to see against the Bengals. Do they finally activate Huff and get a better pass rush?

Next offseason...need a new DT, LB, S, and Pass Rusher. Simple.

where do you find the all 22.  does nfl plus have it?

The biggest need this team has is D coach and maybe head coach, far ahead of the player positions listed.

They have loyalty to some 100% total jags because they talk a good game.  Also I've said it many times our schemes suck.

Dline splits way too wide, totally over doing the rotation thing.  Play your best players, give them the odd breather sure but snap counts as low as they are is stupid.

Secondary does not have a clue what it is doing half the time.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing.

The entire scheme is dependent on communication and its noticed in the secondary but interested in where else you saw it?  It did seem like a few times because of the DL rotation and versatility, they were late to get there assignment when subbing in and out.

The pass rush is concerning considering the whole concept is based on getting pressure with the front 4.  Williams/Lawson got home late in a clutch moment, which forced a punt in the 4th which was nice to see but yeah, Brissett had all day back there.

That was Adams only snap of the day.  The Whitehead observation is interesting, he was definitely better vs. the pass vs. the Ravens. I feel as though I saw a bunch of times where the Jets were in the backfield and seemed to get to deep for either RB or Brissett.

I think the communication and better timing/discipline can be fixed, but the overall lack of pass rush is concerning for this system.

I thought it was wide too but Cleveland was wide too...watched some others, and the same. Difference was, the other players were just better and quicker getting to the QB.

I only mentioned the communication problem overall because I had just watched a play where I think, Kwon shifted everyone in the wrong direction too late and Cleveland ran the opposite way for a huge gain. I guess that's more of a wrong play by the coaches or a bad adjustment by the player. I'm no expert lol.

Yeah pass rush is the biggest issue. There's no speed. They're all power rushers between Lawson, JFM, and Martin. Speed guys are Huff and Johnson. I hope they see more snaps. Otherwise, you need to start sending a blitzer to get home.

Didn’t Lawson  make a sack at a pretty crucial interval in the game that prevented Cleveland from putting the game away? Two games beck after a season ending injury I’d say that’s at least a modest level of stepping up. No?

Yeah I don’t think Lawson is the issue here. Williams playing limited snaps still doesn’t make any sense. Nathan Shepherd playing at all makes no sense. The secondary overall looks lost. Hopefully it’s corrected or else Chase and Higgins will go nuts.

Safeties suck.  Maybe davis can emerge, that would just be amazing.  I imagine with their first rounder next year they’re taking a front 7 player.

Didn't miss that. Him and Quinnen made a good push when it counted. That's what you want. Was commenting on mostly the rest of the game. Takes a while for him to get home and Cleveland was getting the ball out quickly.

Joe D had to build the offense first.  He has done that and can now focus all resources on this defense.  Next years draft will be heavy if not all defense.  We need a stud DT, LB and safety in the worst way.

100pct. The priority should always be the offense.  But saleh, being a defensive guy should be able to get more out of these guys.

I do think they are significantly better on defense this year than last when they never made a stop.

I agree with that. Not sure if Brissett is really that good or they made him that good. Tough to argue that.

Lost though?   Seems harsh.  Neither QB has gone over 225 they've faced.  Forced an INT each game.  While Brissett was over 70% (ton of screens) they held Lamar to 56% completion. Seems like you can connect at least 2 TD's to clear communication issues, 1 in each week, which I guess is where you're getting lost from?  But that's an easy clean up, or at least you would think.

Coverage he’s been fine. Cooper got him a few times which is expected. I wasn’t expecting him to be Aeneas Williams but there some tough film here:

At 1:40 he’s basically the hostess escorting Chubb to his table.

The Cooper TD breakdown was inexcusable.
