Jets Could be Down to Fourth Left Tackle as Zach Wilson Prepares to Return

Even before the Jets lost Mekhi Becton for the season with a knee injury, the team was making an effort to add an insurance policy in free agent Duane Brown.  Just days after Brown visited, Becton went down for the year and a deal with Brown got done.  Not long after, it was Brown who was injured and destined for short-term IR.

The injury to Brown meant that right tackle, turned left tackle and back to right tackle again George Fant, would be flipping back to the left side.  Now after leaving yesterday’s game (easily his worst as a Jet) due to a knee injury, the Jets could now be down to their fourth left tackle for week four.

While it would be unrealistic to expect a team to have four starting-level left tackles on their roster, it shouldn’t be unrealistic to expect a team to do better than Conor McDermott in that role.  Since arriving as a free agent a couple of seasons ago, McDermott has been nothing but a liability in pass protection.  In fact, the Jets would have been better off retaining departed tackle Chuma Edoga to fill that role.

But as it stands, Wilson is expected to be under center on Sunday and McDermott, the team’s fourth left tackle, protecting his blind side.  Good luck to Wilson and here’s to a healthy dose of deep drops and rollouts.

I think I would rather play Mitchell at LT than McDermott. He was not even remotely competitive yesterday. Fant is a dead man walking he is not going out of his way to come back

Fant's an impending free agent.  I'd think he'd want to get healthy and play well to be able to get a good deal from some team in the offseason.  So, he should be motivated to do well from a selfish perspective, if nothing else.

Either Fant or Brown needs to get in there ASAP.

God the excuses the rest of the season are gonna be painful....this year is shaping up to be a lot worse than I thought.

Yup and Saleh and JD will ride those excuses until the wheels melt off.

Let me get this straight, being down to your 4th LT should not have a measurable impact on QB performance?

As much as I enjoy watching sauce shut people down the Jets should have gone Ikey at 4

Joe Douglas doubled down on Becton and that was a crucial error

I don’t think we draft Mitchell if we take ikey. And I am not sure I would trade Mitchell for ikey right now.

Start Mike White, no excuses then.
Usually against this idea .. butting seeing as this may permanently remove Mike White from the Jets (or any other team) permanently ... I'm srarti g to come around to it.

Because improving your 4th string left tackle with a top 5 pick seems reasonable.

You guys are just too much.

4th string T about to start...

And somehow this one turns into a bash ZW thread.

Comical.  The kid hasn't even played yet and he's being attacked.

Hasn’t even played yet? Love how this is the new defense. Just act like last year doesn’t exist. So who was that handsome young man I saw running around last year grounding balls to Michael Carter?
