Popular Post 92ShaunEllis92
Zach Wilson faces new challenge following late Jets brilliance By Steve Serby October 3, 2022 | 10:55pm Now here’s the new challenge for Zach Wilson: Don’t be a one-hit wonder. Before Wilson engineered his dramatic fourth-quarter comeback win in Pittsburgh, he listened to Steelers fans chanting for their Favorite Son quarterback before and after No. 1 pick Kenny Pickett replaced Mitch Trubisky. In the blink of an eye, Wilson resembled the quarterback the Jets promised he would be on Draft Day 2021, and the last thing he will want to hear when he returns for his 2022 MetLife Stadium debut against the Dolphins is that deflating chorus of “Mike White” or “We Want Mike” that was ringing in Joe Flacco’s ears. Wilson gave the fan base only flashes as a rookie, beating the Titans early and outdueling Trevor Lawrence late, but he raised the bar when he was at his best when his best was required on Sunday. By no means does it automatically signal the official start of a second-year leap, but it allows the franchise and its long-suffering loyalists to spend this week dreaming. It allows Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh — not to mention defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich — at least for the time being, to stop gasping for … heir. Zach Wilson dances after scoring a touchdown on Sunday. Getty Images “He’s always been a dog,” wide receiver Braxton Berrios said. “That’s the first thing I knew about him coming in here when we drafted him was he was an absolute competitor. He had that dog in him, and he was gonna fight and find a way.” Even when Wilson struggled, his mobility kept him out of harm’s way and on a couple of hopeless occasions, he smartly threw the ball away to live another day. “He’s the same guy play in, play out,” Berrios said. What he did at the end was what franchise quarterbacks are mandated to do: Elevate those around him. His offensive line was decimated and furiously reshuffled, but Wilson stood tall in the pocket and surveyed the field and delivered with accuracy and overcame it. If football is a game of flinches, Wilson was playing a different game. “He was very poised, very calm throwing the ball, throwing darts, throwing lasers exactly where they needed to go,” Saleh said Monday, “and guys were just grinding after catch, getting yards after catch.” The darts, the lasers, Wilson carried those into the NFL with him. His ultimate growth from here will be dependent upon how quickly and how masterfully he learns how to play the quarterback position at this level. “It was very electric,” safety Lemarcus Joyner said. “It was great to have Zach back, I think missing the first three games he did really well coming back, and he was very composed, very mobile and he made some really good throws … a lot of excitement.” Wilson enjoys a benefit that has been virtually foreign to Daniel Jones — second year with the same head coach, offensive coordinator and same offense. “I felt Zach was really resilient, really confident throughout the whole game,” tight end Tyler Conklin said, “but I think really in that fourth quarter he really settled in and he was, ‘I’m gonna lead us to victory,’ and he did that.” Zach Wilson led the Jets to a win over the Steelers on Sunday. AP Saleh should no longer have to implore Wilson to play boring football. Douglas has gotten him better playmakers and thought he had surrounded him with better protectors, until the dominoes began falling left and right. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur’s Florham Park Special got Wilson a TD catch from Berrios, and the OC and QB got Elijah Moore and Corey Davis involved. “He’s a natural-born leader,” center Connor McGovern said. “He’s doing the right things right now. I’m happy for him, very happy for him.” The roller-coaster ride with a young franchise quarterback doesn’t end overnight. Jets fans can tell you as much. But their young franchise quarterback showed up as a resilient fighter in crunch time. What they wouldn’t give for an encore. 4
Popular Post jgb
Considering my expectations were basically zero, putting together 2 drives when they counted most to win the game, he was definitely better than I thunk. But is it good enough? If he doesn't continue to improve, it won't be. Hoping he needed a few quarters to get it together was mostly rust related. 7

I'm hoping for much more Q4 Zach in the coming weeks ... and a lot less Q1-3 Zach. But I'm expecting a mixture of the two. Things are never as clear cut, there'll be good and bad, the optimism is that there'll be more good than bad. We're entering a tough stretch of our schedule, so this will be a bit of a "baptism by fire" until the bye week. But the games this year are very watchable and entertaining - not something that has been the case for a while. Those two divisional home games before the bye may be the best barometer for how Zach is playing and how we are doing overall - any rust should be long gone, things that need time to gel should have done so. Let's see how we really stack up against our divisional rivals.
Jets723
Rust was certainly a factor. You can’t miss most of preseason and the first 3 games and have no rust. His mobility really helped the oline there us no denying that and he threw the ball away which makes his completion percentage take a dip but I’m just happy he was starting to throw the ball away more when nothing was there. Obviously there were still big drops from the receivers. Like I said Sunday the only play that bothered me was the first interception which he forced. It was a bad play call but regardless ZW needs to just keep taking what the defense goes fed him and not force anything like that play

Honestly, this is a big reason why I expected Zach’s debut to be on the road. That same game played in the Air Conditioner? There would’ve been a Mike White-out of chants by the third quarter. Much better to let him knock off some of the rust in an away game. I’m enjoying the relative reprieve this week. Be nice if Zach can keep the boo birds at bay this Sunday.

I told you he needs to be consistent, he has sucked more than he’s played good. We need more than one quarter of great football per game out of him. Yet, he showed something that everyone should be excited about in the fourth quarter. 8 hours ago, Charlie Brown said: They lied to you!! They can say what they want but the tape DON’T LIE!!! Lets Go!! True, but that’s a part of that game. That pick at the end of first half wasn’t a lie either. Trust me, I’m here to help. If the kid cleans up the mental errors, cleans up his footwork and stays healthy we may see something we have been waiting for a long time. LaFleur learning how to adapt to Zach’s strengths is the wildcard. Zach learning to limit boneheaded moves and maybe getting a little better WR screen feel would be huge. LaFleur letting him get into a groove and accept that he is only go as far as Zach will take him is huge. One of the underrated parts of Zach’s game Sunday was how he stayed calm and toss the ball away when he needed to. Squelched the hero ball until it was there to be had. He may have made one of the best and most athletic pick up diving throw the ball away plays I’ve seen. On that busted gadget play.
SuicidalSince98
The play at the end of the half is either insanely bad play design or a bad route by Moore. Moore literally takes the CB to the area that Jeff smith is going. Feel like on that play moore should run a big comeback or crosser to open up the left corner of the field

He needs to take better care of himself to avoid injuries ... he's no good to us on the side line.

We never win a game at Pittsburgh, a game that ALL the "experts" pick against us, a game where our OLINE is in shambles, a game where there is a late hit at the end of the half and the other team kicks a 59 yard fg, a game where the back up rookie QB makes their debut, a game where we are leading and then in a blink down 10 point in the 4th quarter, a game where we convert a 4th and 7 and a 3d and 6 in crunch time, where we overcome penalties on key drives, a fumble going into the endzone. We would have never won this game this game in the past. But WE DID WIN IT on Sunday with ZACH WILSON at Qb 1

That said, I think it's more than that. I think this team is learning how to win games. They put together a 4th quarter comeback @Cleveland with Flacco at QB a couple of weeks ago. These guys have a lot of confidence and that can go a long way.

I think the Flacco comeback got the team believing, but it was really important to get one with Zach leading the way, since he'll (hopefully) be the guy running the show going forward. Many people here said that Zach wouldn't have been able to pull off the comeback against the Browns, and the thought crossed my mind too, but it's really big that he proved us wrong - and more importantly, proved it to the rest of the guys in the locker room.
