Rhule Fired

I can't imagine Rhule actually said this.  But if he did, yeah, paying a QB $18.9M to NOT play football for your team isn't evidence of a team unwilling to spend.

Rhule coached at Temple.  I highly doubt they were big spenders.  Figure it the f**k out.

If he said it he's a raging loon. Any rational person would know the end is nigh and do everything in their power to go out with class for the next job interview. Of course, maybe he has decided -- and I could understand this -- screw the NFL, I'm going home (to college). Still... I also have a hard time buying it.

whats the point when Zach is going to throw it to him 2 times a game. im afraid that yesterday's game with the... run...run..run and make Zach throw it as little as possible will be the gameplan going forward. if that happens its such a waste of a talented WR group that we ever had.

I could argue this may be the most talented RB group we've ever had.

Davis is a WR 3. Moore will never produce the way you want him to until they realize he is better off in the slot. Wilson is a stud who is still earning trust with ZW who hasn't gotten a lot of reps with him. I think it will balance out once defenses adjust and the O line gets right.

I would feel more empathy for a bus driver or construction worker that got fired.  I don't see thought times for a guy that signed a $62 million contract indwell probably line up a nice college gig in quick order.  .

He doesn't  have to. He can take the rest of thebseason off and look for work next season. He is still being paid.

It was one of several terrible decisions that got him fired, for sure.  Not sure where to rank it.  For me it would be # 1 but it might not have been for the Carolina front office.

It was one of the most egregious unforced errors in recent NFL history. The upside was so small compared to the downside even if Darnold hit. They could've used the tag to force him to the bargaining table if he was a revelation. They basically bet the difference between the tag and the option (like what 10 milllion against 19 million?) with no odds. And in any case, the only way he was gonna earn that option cash is if his play didn't warrant it -- if he was awesome, they would've extended him anyway after last season. Bad idea jeans.

Firing/scapegoating Joe Brady was also a horrid decision.

That was the move of a desperate man. When you are drowning, you'll pull your would-be rescuer down.

Reminds me of the time when Rex Ryan fired his OC, Greg Roman, in Buffalo.  He did so after the team had just lost an early season shootout to the Jets.  The prior year, Roman had led the Bills to the # 8 best offense in the league with Tyrod Taylor at QB.

Yet folks like @Irish Jet still worship at the guy's feet.  (Foot joke intentional)

Yep. You caught me editing the worst unforced error comment. The only way Darnold would earn that option cash is if his play didn't warrant it. Terrible.

I’ll believe it once they have a top pick secured because I have a hard time believing he’s walking into a complete mess at QB

I agree with you

He certainly would not go there with Sam or baker.

get a high choice and draft his guy.

jimmy g will be avail as well since he is on a 1 year i think. Bring him in for a year while you groom the pick

At the moment Baker's the worst starter in the NFL. You can't get worse than dead last in total offense and worst QBR in the NFL.

Thru five games last year, Darnold was actually looking decent. I think his passer rating was in the 90s (or at least close). The wheels fell off for him when McCaffery got hurt.

Hey, no problem. I'm just repeating  what Carolina fans have been saying about the worst active NFL QB this league has seen in some time. Enjoy Baker.

Will do.. and you keep hoping the light comes on for Sam.

Just don’t hold your breath, because as bad as Mayfield has been, he couldn’t beat out Baker. ?

Sam Darnold was a Jet…

I’m well versed in having a team dead last in offense and a QB with the worst QBR in the NFL.

Remember Sam Darnold after the first 5 games of last season?

Baker looks even worse than Darnold. I doubt Baker is a starter in this league next season after getting 3 head coaches fired.

You could be right, but I thought the wheels came off when Darnold broke into tears after Robbie Anderson started clowning him on the field and sidelines.
It’s tough to come back from that.

I don’t think he’ll be either if he doesn’t have a drastic turnaround this year.

It’s a result oriented business. Then again, you never know.(see Wentz, Carson)

Sad reality is three weeks ago Jet Nation would have been falling over themselves to fire Saleh and bring this turd in. Little did we know Saleh was just out getting fitted for his green jacket!

Nobody, not even the most anti Saleh guys here wanted to replace him with Rhule.

Recruits well except the two most important spots QB and OL.Has to be one of the 5-10 worst in game coaches in CFB.

His contract with Rutgers doesn't allow any leeway that the university would go for until at least after next year. More importantly they have millions tied up with him and facilities/infrastructure deals. He's not going anywhere unless the Board of Governors just magically decides to throw money away so they can pay someone more than they paid Schiano.

If there is a bit of a fire sale:

The one I'd like to see the Jets make an offer to get, who's a FA after the season anyway, is Bozeman. He's been on IR since August and in the meantime I think they're at least not-dissatisfied with how Elflein's filled in for him so far, so they don't need him as much as they thought they did in the offseason:

  • he's a previously-reliable starter for Baltimore;
  • he's dirt cheap (we'd only be on the hook for the remaining balance of his $1MM base salary);
  • he plays C and G better than our other backups;
  • if Douglas ideally desires drafting a long-term center instead, he may still want to extend him for a decently-low amount just so he can head into the draft without no center nor feeling pressure to extend McGovern before then. No one likes being pigeonholed into a position, hoping the one guy you want falls to your slot. But meanwhile our backup center costs more.
  • if we didn't get exactly the C prospect we wanted in the draft, we could do worse than having him start for one season there -- or even at LG (if they want enough insurance to feel ok about cutting ties with Tomlinson with the way he's played so far).

Depends on what they want for him (and how close he is to returning); devil's always in the details.

wow

A lot of folks wanted this guy instead of McCarthy or Gase.

We know what happened with Gase but McCarthy is suddenly 16-6 in his last 22 games as the Dallas coach and is 147-93 for his career, with a ring.

To be fair, it's looking like none of those 3 are particularly great.... although McCarthy seems to be turning things around.

I thought he would be a good HC. That coaching staff crashed and burned quickly. Joe Brady was being talked about as a HC candidate. He gets fired and is now a QB coach.

Firing Brady was the move that had me lose all respect for Rhule. Killed the kids career temporarily at least and made him an escape goat.

gonna have top 1-3 pick next year

True.

But that team has no talent, at all.   They are a few drafts away from being competent.

Sam who? I'm on the Zach bandwagon now. Plenty of room if you want to hop aboard, that is if Baker's cellar QBR isn't weighing  you down ???

He had McCaffrey against New England in Week 9.  Result:  16-33, 172 yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs.  Pats 24, Panthers 6.

And Darnold can't stay healthy long enough for it to make a difference anyways.  15 games missed over his first 4 seasons in the league.

Say what you will about Mayfield, but when he was given the job in Cleveland, he didn't miss a game over his first 3 seasons.
