What percentage of a roster should be on rookie contracts ?

Recommended Posts

Is there. Ageneral guideline that constitutes good roster and cap management.  We’ve happened to hit at a high rate the last two drafts but in the few drafts before that we are probably underweighted.  Do we think our number of rookie contracts on the roster is on the low side compared to the rest of the league?

QB, LT, EDGE, & CB are the premier positions. If you can hit on your draft picks consistently then you won't have to worry about the cap and you can pay home grown talent.

If I had to give a percentage 13-20% - that would be 7 draft picks making the team plus a handful of undrafted guys.

But that’s just in one draft.  So on average guys are on rookie contracts 4 or 5 years.  Is a general rule of thumb, 7 rook, 6 /and years 5 3rd years, 4 4th years? Lose/cut a guy every year so that’s almost half the roster.

Whoops read title wrong haha I'd say if you can have 50-65% on rookie contracts then you are in a good spot but it really depends on if you have those rookies playing as starters or depth. More than 1 way to skin a cat.
