So Zach Wilson is a streaky QB

Recommended Posts

Couple of mistakes, but I'm seeing the positives that it's a couple.

A high pass here, a missed pass there. But there were less of them. He's aided by having a wonderful Run game, which takes so much pressure off him. He's definitely a work in progress, but if it's Wilson of last year, he has 4 turnovers yesterday.

Only time will tell if Wilson is the answer, but he's definitely getting smarter, and subsequently better.

Listen we just upset the team that every sports show says is going to be the Super Bowl champions this year.
I think some of you need to lighten up on this kid he's only been playing in the league for a year and a half. Yes he's a kid and he's playing in the hardest media market in the NFL. He's 23 years old some of you expect him to play like Peyton Manning or Dan Marino in their 8th year? In my opinion he did a fine job today. It takes all three phases and we won the game.
If you've watched football for a long time other than for playing FanDuel, there have been a lot of Quarterbacks who are streaky. It's not like the kids not trying he definitely is. We're six and three give him a damn break.
Hell when I was 23 years old I had one of the best rock bands in the world I would have put it up against led Zeppelin or Aerosmith! However I knew nothing about business management, credit cards, women, housing, and it was before the internet. Like I said he's only 23. I think the kid did a fine job out there today. We beat the team all of the talking heads on the sports shows consider the Super Bowl favorites.

Can we hear some of your music?

I don't know what is more surprising, that Alex Chilton is actually still alive or that he's a Jet fan.

IMHO his main improvement today was his willingness to stay in the pocket and deliver the ball even when he knew he was going to get hit.  If he keeps this up it will be HUGE!

If he keeps this up he'll elevate to a Sanchez level QB but with LOTS more room to grow.

There was an interesting infographic during yesterday's game that looked at Allen's first 18 games vs. Zach's. Yes, it only covered passing, and I know Allen was and is much more of a dual threat QB than Zach will ever be. But the stats were a lot more similar than you might think.

By no means does it say Zach will ever hit anywhere near where Allen is now - but it does support the view that Zach is still growing and has a long way to go before we truly know what we have. I know a lot of posters here want a decision to move on (or not) by year end ... I just don't see any way that we cut bait after this year. Even bringing in "serious competition" seems unlikely to me at this stage. The next 8 games would need to be a disaster for us to pull the plug on the guy. In my opinion.

I'm not sure he's streaky.  I think he is still immature and is a super competitive athlete.  I think yesterday showed that the coaching staff finally got through to him that he doesn't need to win the game himself.  I'm almost certain last weeks game showed him how selfish he was playing.  I did see a few things yesterday that made me think he's starting to get it - the drop down sack under pressure, throwing the ball out of bounds when pressured, and when he stepped up into the pocket and ran for the 1st.  Hopefully these are things he remembers and will continue to do.  The more he does them the less he thinks... and that's a good thing.

Biggest thing from yesterday was the mistakes we saw last week (Scrambling around like his hair is on fire, throwing the ball up for grabs, not throwing it out of bounds were not there today. He was quick, decisive and when it wasn't there he step up and ran forward instead of backwards and side to side.

Zach still has alot of work to do and the schedule is not getting an easier. Teams are going to start realizing "Hey this game is not a slam dunk anymore.

Oh, and the run near the goal line where he put his shoulder down.  I'm not asking him to be reckless but there should be designed runs for him as he is pretty quick.

Yeah, suggest he might actually be coachable, by far biggest concern I’ve had. Him running straight for first downs much better than him running around looking for an empty chair before the music stops.

Surely ZW has to realize that not doing the fire drills back there and taking small positive yards when there’s a problem is a better option.

I honestly think the running for 1st downs instead of waiting for someone to get open is a much bigger deal than most realize.

That was when he started playing better last year too.    Roll out if need be, if he doesn't see something wide open, take off.

caught covid yesterday so i couldnt comment before, i can barely write this now. but i will eat crow from yesterday, Zach was great. did everything we asked. i will not ask for another QB. Zach gets the rest of the season. then we will look at his stuff. im not saying i wont criticize him if he has a bad game.

one observation from yesterday. and this isnt Zachs fault. but i noticed that Buffalo didnt blitz much. even the announcers said they were surprised after how good that worked for NE. im guessing Buffalo didnt respect us much to even try to blitz.

the 4 teams who Blitz the least are the Bears, Bills, Jets, and Viking. good news is we play 2 of those teams in the next 3 games.

so before im all in on Zach lets see what happens in NE. im pretty sure they will use the same gameplan that killed Zach last week.

again its not his fault they didnt blitz. but part of me wonders if thats why we didnt see any chicken dances.

Zach was getting rid of the ball very quickly yesterday.  If he can continue that - the blitz is mostly negated and just opens up more opportunities for big plays.

Question really is - can Zach and will Zach continue to step up into the pocket, trust his reads and get rid of the ball quickly.  If he can - it should be all we ask of him this year.

Learn to be steady and make quick decisions.  Get that down and then he can start to try and be prolific.  But take this year to just get the steady part down.

With Zach's arm strength - guys don't have to be very open in that short intermediate game.

Plus it’s a really huge help for the defense. If he can sneak a couple extra first downs a game like that  it keeps defense rested so they can close games  out like yesterday, Josh Allen looked visibly beat down after yesterdays game.

No design runs for Zach. He is too fragile. When he was on the ground after that sack, I thought he would be done for the season. He is doing the right thing now as far as runs. He should have about 3 opportunities to run every game as it is.

true enough he needs some seasoning.  he's barely played a whole season.  he's winning the games where he's played to the strengths of his team and that's that what he's got to learn.

He’s looks like a different guy when he’s not running around like a chicken without his head. When he stays in the pocket and delivers those throws he looks like a seasoned vet

He didn't bail on clean pockets yesterday. That was the biggest difference IMO. We've all seen the splits on him when pressured vs not, in the pocket vs not. I will say it's impressive that the staff got through to him in just a week, and that he was receptive and made the adjustment. He hung in the pocket like he hasn't all year and he got the ball out quickly.

I've said all season that he's missed tons of underneath stuff because he's playing scared/bothered by the rush. Whether that's just how he played at BYU or that he's worried about his knee, I don't know, but when he stays in the pocket he's a fine quarterback. He needs to learn when to use his mobility. He had a couple of nice scrambles yesterday between the tackles and only escaped the tackle box a couple of times, and all were valid decisions.

Zach not stepping up into the pocket after this game would be like a tennis player with a bad serve and discovering a flaw in his toss and just not correcting it. If he plays like Mr. BYU against NE, we might have a very up and down season and a QB that just teases us all season. I can live with the sporadic bad throws to open receivers  if he just looks like he is playing under control as he did yesterday.

If Zack Wilson (at this point of his career):

  • Stays in the pocket
  • Gets the ball out of his hands (even if its a throw away) in 3 second or under
  • Plays within the offense

He will be a solid starter that you can win with.

Since he's so young there's time for him to develop into more than that which obviously would be gravy...but if he just relaxes like he did this week then this team is going to be tough to beat.

Zach isn't streaky. He's not anything yet. He's a young guy trying to figure it out.

He may, he may not. But from our perspective, we have to suffer the trials and tribulations and be patient. It sucks, you don't want to hear that, but face facts, it's where we are.

If this kid turns a corner, with his physical talent and the guys around him, this D, we can compete with anyone. Imperative to give him everyone last possible opportunity to show what he is.

Leaving that out isn’t a minor thing, though. When a QB scores 9 TDs with his legs it also robs him of 9 TD opportunities with his arm on TD drives. Rushing TDs from QBs are often (if not mostly) kind of shoulder-shrugged as a nice bonus but not really relevant to being a QB. Except rushing TDs are still TDs.

On the other hand y2 Allen also fumbled 14x (by dumb luck only losing a few) - which, I might add, he’s also doing this year - and just looking at TDs/INTs/PY leaves that out, too.

Just saying it’s not intellectually honest to remove not just points, but the other half of what made him just about (if not outright) the most dangerous QB in the game by the next season.

With the way the rest of this roster is constructed, if Wilson consistently becomes even 70% of what Allen’s become (half is a bit too strong), these Jets will win a whole lot more football games.

This is for you and Fidelio. The thing that exited me the most, is the chemistry he's developing with GW. With Davis coming back after the bye, Wilson has two receivers that he has a good chemistry with. Make a big difference in our passing offense.

If we even go .500 the rest of the way the only thing that should be done is just continue to build around Zack. Continue to improve the line, get some injured plays back, and even draft more depth. We just need to build and continue to make Zack understand that with this D and running game if you do the passing the way you do it with the plays here and there as needed, the running game, D, and STs, will do the rest.
