Mets sign Correa!!

I don't love it either.  It's far less fun to root for a team like this than a young, hungry team.  The Braves feel like they're constructed perfectly to me.  I thought the Mets' plan was going to be FA for 2-3 years while developing the minors (3 first rounders this year, unless we lose one for Correa) and then try to recreate what the Braves did.  But the Correa signing changes that story.

I hope them the best. Nothing is better in baseball summer than when both NY teams are good. I'd love another Subway Series. But from a pure baseball perspective, I'm not overly impressed. I'd still take the Braves or Dodgers as the favorites in the NL.

By the way, this is unprecedented. Not even George Steinbrenner went this far. The Mets are approaching a $500 million payroll. They'll spend >60% more than the 2nd biggest payroll (and aren't going to win a thing). They're going to pay more in luxury tax than a handful of teams spend on payroll.

"Uncle Stevie" (dumbest nickname I've ever heard, but in line with "Timmy Trumpet" or whatever that stupid thing is) is about to learn a hard lesson. Not that he cares. The real-life Bobby Axelrod will just keep stealing money to feed his hobbies.

if you grew up in NYC and had a bunch of friends chances are they were a mix of Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants, Ranger, Islanders fans. only the Knicks were always loved cause the Nets were so bad in the 80s when i grew up. and they were NJ. 

having to hear about all those championships and you guys getting whoever you wanted in FA while the Mets didnt, as a teen you hear sh*t about it. 

i am the guy they were thinking about when they made that shirt.... im a Mets fan and whoever is playing the Yankees. im a Jets fan and whoever is playing the Giants.

To some extent, you're right about Cohen/Hal. Except the fact is that Judge took less money from the Yankees to stay. SD and SF offered more. But I do agree, Cohen's presence means Hal can no longer be content to spend right up to the luxury tax limit and nothing more. So, like I stated earlier in the thread, this is a positive to the Yankees, thus rendering the "suck it Yankees" posts utter nonsense. All that does is put on full display the inferiority complex is alive and well. Those people are unwittingly only embarrassing themselves.

Cohen's presence though also means that a majority of teams are going to get pissed, and they're going to try to reign him in like they did with George. Changes are coming.

It's the smart move. With the shift ending next season having Lindor and Correa on that side of the field is going to be a lot more valuable than people realize right now. Baty is better off given his athleticism but the writing is on the wall for them making a push for Ohtani and it's safe to say he'll be a centerpiece.

That's probably why he’s spending large now to grandfather in these contracts so that “The Cohen Tax” Part II at next years’  Owners Meetings won’t nail him further. 
 

We are firmly set for the next 5 years with some notable contracts coming off the books in the next 2-3 years. Plenty of time to get the farm system up to speed while playing competitive ballgames

I don't know how many first rounders you get.  You've signed premium FA, plus when payroll goes above a certain level, those draft picks drop.

I also don't know if the picks are based on last year or this year, my knowledge is poor at best on how it works now.

Exciting times to be a Mets fan!  Make no mistake, there's now huge pressure on Buck to get the Mets to the WS.  Anything less will be a huge disappointment.  You don't shell out this kind of money to not make it there.  And, Cohen might even expect to win it this year.

I've long felt that the Mets need to make Canha the 4th OF.  He's solid all around, but doesn't hit enough to start.  So, maybe Baty to LF? The Mets might have the luxury to start him and let him take his lumps for awhile to see if he develops.

Baty, Mauricio, and Vientos are all now possible trade bait, too.  Probably look for a SP at the deadline, or sooner.  Starting pitching is probably this team's Achilles Heel.  Ohtani rumors will be persistent.

Hitting to the opposite field died with Derek Jeter and Adrian Gonzalez. Maybe it returns in the distant future but certainly not any time soon. No shift means elite defensive players on the left side of the field will go back to having their old value, i.e. Rey Ordonez, Vizquel, Chavez...etc. The Mets have two elite gloves on that side of the field now and both can hit the hell out of the ball. It's a great position to be in with the change that's happening next year.

Agreed.  I don't love the signing (and if we were willing to spend that much, we should've gone after Judge) but these owners make more money than we know.  Though I'm sure they'll still raise ticket prices and it won't be cheap to go to a game.

i could be wrong on this but doesnt the luxury tax get split between those small market teams? if not then where does it go?
