A Case for Drew Lock

The Jets, as you all know, are going to finish a bit too high in the standings to have an easy stab at QB early in the upcoming draft.  Maybe they like a guy and can manuever (or even stay put) and get their man, but assuming the more likely scenario plays out where they just can't make it work to get to where they need to get to, to get the QB they want to get to....maybe they should consider Drew Lock.

You might recall that Lock was drafted 42nd overall in the 2019 Draft by the Broncos.  And you may vaguely remember that Lock wasn't exactly lights out when he got chances to start with the Broncos.  ...But, what you are less likely to understand being Jets fans in a big east coast media market is that Lock was doomed to fail in Denver the second he was drafted.

Heading into the 2019 offseason, the Broncos had hired Vic Fangio.  Fangio and Elway(Denvers GM at the time) both publicly laid it out that Fangio would more or less run the defense, and they'd go out and get a veteran QB to run Gary Kubiaks offense.  That plan kind of fell apart when Kubiak changed his mind about coming back as OC, but they still went out and signed Joe Flacco to be their starting QB.  Elway announced they had picked up a championship caliber QB still in his prime.  (his actual words)  They hired Rich Scangarello to be the OC, and then again, publicly proclaimed they would NOT be taking a QB in round 1 of the 2019 Draft.

The 2019 Draft had Kyler Murray go 1/1, and Daniel Jones went 6th.  Dwayne Haskins went 15th.  Denver had held the 10th pick and traded out to 20 where they ended up drafting Noah Fant, a TE.  As round 2 was underway, Drew Lock, who Elway had ranked fairly high, became according to Elway...too much of a value to allow to fall much farther and he traded up to pick 42 overall and selected Lock.

It was learned later on after Fangio was fired after 2021, that Fangio hated the pick, did not like Lock and there is a story floating out there from Fangio himself talking about Lock showing up to his first practice and saying something that instantly annoyed Fangio, and gave a bad first impression.  Fangio did not like the pick.  Fangio wasn't an offensive guy, didn't want to develop a QB, and wasn't suited to do doing that.  HE was and is a defensive guy that wanted to play tough D and not have the O lose games.  Anyhow, the point is....Drew Lock found himself on a team, with a coach who didn't want him, didn't like him and didn't want to invest in developing him.

Flacco was terrible in Denver and eventually go hurt.  Lock started the final 5 games of the 2019 Season and he went 4-1.  Fangio and Scangarello also didn't get along, and so Denver moved on from him as OC and hired Fritz Shurmur.  Shurmurs offenses in Denver were very bland and predictable, alot of runs on 1st and 2nd down leaving the QB to often have to convert 3rd and longs.  THere was a running joke in Denver that they'd run 10 fake jet sweeps a game, with the aim to set up an actual jet sweep, but they never called even one, during the entire season.  Lock showed flahses here and there, but all the while, his HC still hated him, and his OC wasn't creative or of much help.

Heading into the 2021, Fangio was basically on the hot seat and they signed Teddy Bridgewater to "compete" with Lock.  By all accounts, Lock won the QB competition that preseason.  Several local Denver media had thought so...most of the fans as well.  It was a surprise when Bridgewater was named the starter...but that again, was due to Fangio hating Lock and wanting a veteran running his bland, game management offense.

Lock didn't play much in 2021 and was traded to the Seahawks in the Russel Wilson trade.  Lock was doing well enough competing for the Seahawks job until he got Covid when it was his turn to start in the preseason.

Lock is a free agent.  He is 6' 4" 228 lbs with a cannon for an arm and he can move some.  He started 4 seasons at Missouri in the SEC playing with and against NFL level competition.  He has flaws, which is why he was a 2nd round pick...and among those is that Lock isn't a great anticipation thrower, doing much better on play action and linear routes like go's and slants as opposed to curls, or outs.  That said, his big arm often makes up for some of his flaws.  IF Lock found himself on team that wanted him, and had an OC that taylored an O to his strengths....Lock still has a shot to tap into some untapped potential.

He will have some appeal to teams that are QB needy but don't have the draft position or capital to get a young prospect.  Perhaps he'd find a fresh start in New York the chance he needs.  Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Anything is possible. The dreamers think we can go pay a kings ransom for a guy who is going to command 30M a year and want a good OL, neither of which we have, or move up and pick the best rated QB in the draft. I don't believe these are an option.

Reality is the cap hell with ZW will force a situation where we either keep ZW as the #2-3 and MW as the one, while drafting a possible developmental guy. Not an ideal situation. Or, we get a middle of the pack veteran and dump ZW, maybe sign MW, and still try a find a later round QB that won't crush us if he fails. I would think a guy that is a boom or bust late rounder, like a Spencer Rattler type? Lots of talent and lots of flaws. Worth a shot if he can be had with a 4th or later. Not sure if that can happen, or if he comes out?

IMO the first 3-4 picks should be OL, with the exception off the guy you just can't pass on if he is there, whomever that may be for you? For me it would be a Michael Mayer type.

Thanks for the post but at the end of the day him not being Zach Wilson would have sufficed.

Having personally watched Drew Lock during his Mizos years, and what he’s looked like as a pro, I can say he’s not a viable option. He’s a one-read QB and does not adapt.  He’ll make nice throws, but is known for bonehead mistakes.  All the talent in the world, with a Pea for a brain as we said at Mizzou.  Nice kid, that’s about it.
