Not much for details out there.  Kids probably caught in a riptide?

 Human instinct is to swim back to shore which is the wrong thing to do.  Swim parallel to shore or just let the riptide take you out to sea until it eases up.  

Glad Hillis survived.  Many parents seem to save their kids in this situation but use every ounce of energy and die from drowning themselves.
