Will We Ever Get Our Mahomes, Allen, Burrow?...

Recommended Posts

This is the number one reason why the Jets are who they are.

If you cant solidfy the QB position for any great length of time, you are constantly trying to tweek the roster to over compensate for it.

50+ years of god awful QB play has put us in this position.

If we drafted Marino, Favre, Manning, Mahomes, Allen are any others of the “we should have drafted when we had a chance” QBs they’d all look like spectrum range of Browning Nagle, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, and Zack Wilson.

The issue is and always has been…we are a second rate organization that has not invested the time and effort in creating a successful infrastructure to sign and develop players and coaches the right way.

We had it briefly with Tuna and Mangini.

Funny that you named 3 QBs on teams that were starved for franchise qbs as well. Bills had been looking since kelly. have the chiefs ever had a super star qb? Len Dawson is a HOFer but anyone else since? an old Montana. Trent green? Alex smith? The bengals? Ken anderson? Andy dalton? If those teams can find one, eventually this team can as well. How old will we be when it happens? That’s the better question.

Sad part is... let's say we did draft someone like Mahomes who would sit for a year.. who would he even sit behind... crazy

Mahomes didn't need to sit to be successful.  He may have been a bit delayed in seeing success, sure.  And he wouldn't have been an immediate sensation like he was under Andy Reid.  But would he be a top 8, top 5 type QB, even here?  Absolutely.  He has traits you just can't teach.

But the Jets, especially under Mike Maccagnan, were never ballsy enough to pick someone like Mahomes.  Andy Reid was.  And he was also ballsy enough to kick Alex Smith to the curb despite Smith having a career year.  He was ridiculed by some on this very board at the time for that very decision.

This.  Franchise QBs are rare as ****.  Teams getting lucky multiple times like the Niners with Montana and Young, or the Packers with Favre and Rodgers is the exception to the rule.  Most teams that have them now were in similar boats to us, as you pointed out.  Sometimes you get lucky and find one only for bad luck to set in like Palmer getting hurt with Cincy, RG3 getting hurt with Washington, or Luck retiring early with Indy.

We aren't the only team that has consistently struck out on top drafted QBs.  Before striking gold on Lawrence, which is who we should have ended up with, the Jaguars invested early 1st rounders into the likes of Byron Leftwich, Blaine Gabbert, Blake Bortles.  It still took them being SO bad that they earned a 1st overall to finally find their guy.  Or the Rams post-Warner with guys like Bradford and Goff.  BOTH picked first overall, btw...  When was the last time we picked 1st overall?  '96 when we took Keyshawn, when no QB even went in the 1st round.  Other than that the closest we've come has been Wilson in '21, and we all know how that turned out(or at least, how it has turned out so far).

Basically you can get lucky and find your Mahomes or Lamar or Rodgers at some random point in the 1st; you can get lucky and find your Brees or Brady at some point post-1st; or you can just tank in a "can't-miss" draft year.  The tanking is the safest bet, assuming you are coming up on a draft with a Manning or Luck or Burrow or Lawrence.  Otherwise you gotta pick the right guy, and more often than not, the guy you pick is going to be a scrub.  I think people wouldn't care so much about our lack of "franchise QBs" as long as guys like Sanchez, Darnold, and Wilson turned into even half-way decent starters.  Sanchez at least had his moments, but....  the problem is that we've missed SO incredibly badly.  I think we're at the point where even if we walk away with a Jimmy Garrapolo from the draft we'll be thrilled.

Personally I think our best bet is going to be a year where we have committed to drafting a QB in the 1st that, by the grace of god, turns out to be one of those Gold-QB drafts.  Like '04 with Eli, Rivers, Big Ben; or 2020 with Burrow, Tua, Herbert.  A draft where, if you're picking early, you can't go wrong.

This^^^

Yet there are people who would take a CB over an MVP QB.

Sigh.
