Historical comparisons for this year

Recommended Posts

Still in a daze about just how awful this season changed on a dime in the last 6 weeks.  Really only 2 seasons of the putrid franchise compare:

1) 1994:  Marino spike game to complete collapse:  Carroll fired at end of season

2) 2008: Mangini loses team as Favre folds down the stretch with injury:  Mangini fired at end of season

Now part 3;  if Saleh survives tomorrow, it will be because he decided to bring in new offensive coaches.  If he is stubborn, he will be gone.  In both prior situations, GM was retained.  Coach took the fall each time.  Also note that going from Carroll, a player's coach, to Kotite, we tanked.  Going from Mangini, a ball buster, to Rex,  we had a couple of great. years.

Lots of reasons to think that all's not well in Florham Park this week.  Not sure Saleh is safe, whether by his own doing, or Woody's.

1986, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2008, 2011, 2022

so many to choose from.

For me personally, the only one definitively worse than this one was 2008 - since we were arguably a SB favorite at 8-3.

gonna be hard to sell no significant coaching staff changes after this.

from your list i dont know how only one was worst.

1986. 10-1 start. very high expectations after going 11-5 the year before. much worst

1994. 6-5 then lose the last 5. idk, looking back we had a good defense but Boomer was at the end of his career. not sure if we were expecting much to be so hurt by it.

1997. yeah that loss to Detroit was rough, that has to be worst than this.

2000. definitely worst. lose the last 3 to not even make the playoffs after making the AFCCG just 2 years ago with Vinny back at QB.

2008. yes i agree, definitely worse.

2011. yes much worst. after 2 AFCCGs we lose 3 straight to miss the playoffs.

2022. not even close to being the worst.

as you said above about 2008 it was expected to be very good. we made our expectations this year by winning 7-8 games. i know your going to say 7-4 changes things but me and a few others kept telling this board that the way we were winning is unstainable with how bad our QB play was. and eventually it caught up with us. if Saleh made the playoffs with the bad QB play we had he should have had a statue made of him at one Jets Drive.

i think cause its real fresh in your mind you think this is the worst.

1984, the Jets were 6-2 and finished 7-9 to miss the playoffs.

In 1985 they went 11-5 and made the playoffs.

My sense is you are buying the Saleh “rebuilding and developing” koolaid and are in denial about how historically bad this collapse is (much like Saleh, himself, who has been smiling all week)

First, no way is 1986 worse - that year, not only did we make the playoffs, but we actually won a playoff game. That team Had more injuries than this Squad, as well.

2011 worse? Nope. First., we only lost 3 straight, not 5 or 6 straight. Second, as you point out, we had just gone to back to back title games. This team hasn’t made the playoffs in 12 years! Your logic is backwards here.

In 97, we lost 3 out of our last 4 - again, not as bad as a 5 or 6 game losing streak.

In 2000, we lost our last 3 games, which again, is not as bad as losing your last 5 or 6 games.

1994 could be considered as bad, but I was young then and didn’t care as much or really appreciate what I was watching.

The only reason 2008 is worse is because of how stacked that team was along with the SB expectations.

For all you know, we might not be 7-4 again for another decade. 7-4 to 7-9 (likely 7-10 after tomorrow) is a brutal, all-time SOJ collapse. And it will define Saleh’s career here unless he makes the playoffs next year.
