Can we please get a punter?

Thomas Morstead was better than Mann.

They should have just stuck with him.

Mann has to go, and the next punter should be a lefty.  Makes it more difficult to catch for some reason.  Belichick has talked about this.

only 11% of people are left-handed. That means it's likely only 3 or 4 teams a year will have lefty punters. Since their punts are going to be different due to foot shape, returners aren't going to be as used to it.

Maybe that’s it.  IDK.

But Belichick seems to think there’s something inherently weird about how the ball comes off a lefty’s foot that makes it difficult to reel in.

Jets need all the help they can get.  Can’t remember the last time they recovered a muffed punt.

2020 30th avg, 31st net average

2021 22nd average 20th net average

2022 17th average, 28th net average.

The net average is a product of the coverage team in general. The 17th average is the punter product. Punter is the least of our worries.

I have one last job for Mann before we let him go:

Punt Mike LaFleur as far away from Florham Park as you can.  Shank him to the next closest football field — I don’t care.

Doesn’t matter if it takes 1000 punts, just get it done and then go see Joe Douglas in his office.

He’s good at aiming the sidelines so we have a chance.

Agreed. It would be nice if this new punter could tackle too

So having three years where his absolute best result is lower than league average is acceptable when there are punters all over the place?

And no net average is not just due to coverage if a punter cannot get hang time on his kicks, or cannot positionally punt his net average will be bad as well.

We had to game lost in big part due to kick return tds, this year.

He is a terrible punter, so yeah we should upgrade if this team has a brain.

And that’s influenced by field position.  Punt from the 50 and a 35 yard punt dropped inside the 15 and you’re a pro bowl P.

Westhoff always said averages were a useless  way to rate P’s.  Said he compared what they averaged on a Sunday vs the other P.  Weather plays into it too often. He said if his punter won that day that’s all that counts, not how someone did on some other field

NEVER draft a punter, you can always sign a league average vet or an undrafted college FA. Absolutely, serious competition should be brought in for Mann. He is not consistent and cost us 2 games where his horrible punts led to return TDs.

No harm in doing so in the 7th round

Like I said, it’s a product of the coverage team in general. Sometimes you’ll get bad hang time but the coverage team still makes up for it. Giving up TDs on a punt is almost never on the punter even if there’s little hang time. You still have 11 guys stopping 1. Bad angles by the coverage, missed tackles is what causes TDs, not bad hang time. If that was the case, you’d never see TDs on kickoffs.
