Ah okay, my mistake. In hindsight we should have traded for him the minute Zach got hurt in preseason. The 49ers had their backs against the wall and didn't want to be forced to cut him and let him walk to Seattle. Ultimately Jimmy G agreed to stay in San Fran and restructure to be an UFA this year.

All good.  Also this is fair in hindsight but the expectations going into the season were that we were still in our rebuilding stage.  We wanted improvement but were not expecting playoffs.  Trading for Jimmy would have just raised questions about Zach and possibly made things worse.  Looking back, yeah it could have saved our season, but I get them not going that route based on what the thinking was last summer.  

 

It's whatever though.  Now we can get him for free if we want(without trading an asset, I mean), and we get one more decent 1st rounder to add to the core of this team.  Even if we made the playoffs with Jimmy, I highly doubt this team was going anywhere with the state our OL was in at the end of the year, and that's assuming Jimmy would have even survived the state of this OL(dude got hurt behind a pretty damn good one in SF).  I can't complain about not trading for him back then.  I can complain about not getting him this offseason though, assuming we don't bring in a solid alternative.
