If you take it at face value, you know he’s either scum or a vanilla townie. Hence why I asked about the ratio of specific roles to vanilla. I don’t know him well enough to assess likelihood of a playing dumb ruse. Although why would a townie want to create the impression that he is LESS likely to be a townie?

Speculating on whether a player is vanilla town or power role is not a good idea.  Anything that "outs" a player as VT limits the pool on who scum will shoot at at night.  You want them to shoot at VTs.

It strengthens your case.

Why indeed.  Sometimes players do that regardless of alignment.  Townies, particularly VTs, sometimes want to look suspicious or more powerful than they are because they're not a big loss if lynched OR they might draw a scum shot.

Scum, meanwhile, sometimes wants to look like they're playing the good townie and being transparent/honest so they don't draw votes.  Scum who says things like "Hey, I get why you think I might be scum" could be trying to "buddy up" to town and avoid the noose.  

Hence....again....can't trust ANYONE and there are always nuanced (@JiFields) things going on amongst experienced players.
