Is Aaron Rodgers to the Jets Really Happening?

I wouldn't say they're "banking" on him long-term either, but they feel he has the kind of talent and work ethic to be an elite QB and they would rather see if it can be with them than someone else

The one case I can think of where a top 1 or 2 QB actually sort of panned out years later, turning into a viable starting option, would be Alex Smith.

But I don't recall Smith looking quite this bad in years 1 and 2.

Wilson has a ton of hurdles to overcome.

The psychological / immaturity / mental / lost the locker room / public humiliation aspect might be as difficult an obstacle as all the actual football-specific challenges (e.g. pre- and post-snap reading of defenses, accuracy, field vision, poise, mechanics, footwork, pocket awareness & habits, etc.).

2 years from now, who knows.

Regardless, I think his best chance to find success would be a change of scenery.  Maybe ATL with Arthur Smith where:

1)  The goal is to run the ball 50 times a game

2)  They are talent-poor in rebuild mode with zero expectations

3)  The fans are relatively tame / apathetic and only show up when the team is good

All In on the Rodgers Idea Draft:  O-Line, O-Line, O-Line, and a FB.  Get one LB.  Need another (to two) from FA.  Got a WR (doesn't matter who, others might be better) for behind Wilson/Moore/Mims.

And feat not, some of those T's are really G's.  Could also give flex to move Becton to G if needed.

I don't think Becton will be here beyond the 2023 season. It'll take a truly remarkable year out of him for the Jets to commit long-term, and even then he'd probably be franchise tagged. I don't think the Jets will feel much remorse if he's upset about playing RT next year.

As much as Bakhtiari has dealt with injury, he's elite when healthy (0 sacks in 11 starts in 2022) and will be 32 years old week 1. You should get two 2 years out of him, possibly more. Injury history is not ideal when you consider what we've gone through, but the Jets want to make a blue-chip investment at T and go into next season with "4 starting-caliber tackles" on the roster. My guess is it will be Becton, Mitchell, a rookie (possibly a T/G), and a veteran. Acquiring Bakhtiari in a trade with Rodgers would kill two birds with one stone and a huge boost IMO. Packers want to re-sign Jenkins and I'm sure some in that organization feel he can thrive at LT if they gave him that job full-time, which probably plays into this some as well.

As far as Zach, I've been pretty vocal about how they're handling it. Jets want to see how he responds this year. There's a long and detailed plan for him that I won't elaborate on right now (happy to share with those interested), but by no means are they flushing him down the drain. I wouldn't say they're "banking" on him long-term either, but they feel he has the kind of talent and work ethic to be an elite QB and they would rather see if it can be with them than someone else... if he ends up sitting for 1-2 years, regains the starting job and were to play at a high level for the next 10 years, whose to say they gave up on him? If they determine he can't be any more than a low-end starter, they will move on and find someone else If they're unsure, they'll probably go year-to-year and see how he plays as a starter while hedging their bet with another young QB. Have to remember: if Douglas and Saleh build a legitimate contender this year and next, they're going to boost their own credibility and will have longer leashes to do as they please.

It’s good to read that they’re skeptical of Becton’s long-term outlook. As encouraged as we all are about the weight loss, he’s still been an injury-prone guy with a body type that invites injury. Agreed about Bakhtiari—I looked up his PFF grades and he is a dominant pass blocker when healthy.

RE: Zach, I get why that would be the Jets’ position on the matter today, but it doesn’t feel all that practical the longer it goes. Is Zach’s camp going to accept putting him in deep freeze for two years, then getting a one-year deal on the end of it? I’d imagine that group is ready to escape New York and the Jets, and given the definitive nature of both Woody’s and Saleh’s comments about him, it doesn’t seem like they’re anxious to invest any more time or resources into his development, other than maybe hoping he develops through osmosis by being around Rodgers.

IMO, if they have to cough up a one for Rodgers, they should do it this year because this is such a flinty draft class.

Wait, what? “Could be”? Because, last night, I leaned over to my 94 year-old grandfather and whispered, “Papa. My close personal friend at-Mogglez told me, in full confidence, that the Jets are definitely trading for Aaron Rodgers and signing David Bakhtiari to relatively team-friendly deals. Isn’t that exciting, papa?” And he whispered—just loud enough to hear over the hum of his oxygen machine—“Moggles…he’s a good boy; a good…man” And I was like, “yeah, sure, yeah” and then he said, “and his father. A good man, too. You should show them both <cough> more respect.” I teared up a little bit and whispered in his ear, “Papa, Aaron Fuccing Rodgers” as he slipped away to the Great Beyond. I teared up. And as I finally peeled the pillow off his face and wiped my fingerprints off of everything, I just kept muttering, “show them more respect?” Bottom line, you better be right about this, pal, or Christmas at the Shane household is gonna be pretty dark times

LOL

For anyone curious about Rodgers’ uhhh quirkiness, this is probably the interview to watch. It’s the Barstool podcast Pardon My Take from late last year. The setup is that the bigger guy is a huge Bears fan who “hates” Aaron Rodgers because Rodgers kicks the sh*t out of the Bears every time out (similar to Jets fans with Tom Brady). Rodgers has been aware of this shtick for a long time, and finally agreed to an open-ended interview with them where he tries to be funny, with mixed results.

For those not inclined to listen, ultimately Rodgers comes off well—doesn’t take himself too seriously, speaks well of his teammates and coaches past and present, and is able to roll with the punches. That said, he’s definitely a little standoffish and a little weird. Similar vibe to when you see Jack White interviewed.

I would say next year give up the 1 b/c they need the 1 this year for a tackle, and next year’s 1 should hopefully be worse if Rodgers plays well.  So I’m thinking a 3 this year and a conditional next year depending on how the jets do.

Exactly

Why in the world would Zach want to return to NY on a cheap 1-year deal after 4 years of embarrassment?

Tony Pauline . . . Has he had a legit Jets-related scoop since Mac got fired?

His takes on our draft plans last year were laughably bad.

You should kiss Tony Pauline's ass- but you're not worthy
