2020 draft class 5th year option. A lesson in what could’ve been.

If giving his extended family a crack at “Generational Wealth” can’t motivate him, nothing will.

didn't he spend like $100k on that necklace?

my guess is if he doesn't get another contract and only plays for one more year after this one - he's probably going to be broke by the time he's 30 years old.

Only other option they have is to let him play out his rookie deal.  $5.9M cap hit, all guaranteed.  We gain nothing by cutting him.  Don't think he is tradeable after two years not playing.  Keep him around, but count on him for nothing.  IF he is healthy, motivated and plays well, that is a bonus, but we can't go into the season with him pencilled in as a starter without a solid plan B.  or C.

If he is healthy and plays well this season, then the decisions come next offseason.

Mekhi Becton is one of JD's easiest decisions this year. He literally has to do nothing about him. Becton will either start the season healthy and motivated or he won't- or who knows, maybe he gets hurt somewhere down the line.

As far as 'penciling him in as a starter', that's lunacy. Becton may have a chance to compete for one of the T spots but nobody (not Woody, not JD, not Saleh, not Hackett) is penciling him in as starter.

The current cost of franchise tagging him for a fifth year is about two million more (at least this year) than his fifth year option. It would make way more sense to see how he performs this year and risk a small premium than guarantee a hefty salary for an additional year. If he has an ok year next season JD can let him walk and hope for a comp pick. If he has a good fourth year and avoids injury, then see if he can make it through a second year to justify a second contract.

I don’t think the Eagles used more resources to build the best OL in the NFL. JD was there for most of it.   This is one reason the jets did not make the playoffs.  With a better line and MW they would have.

This.

  1. The highest resource spent on the OL - and the only 1st rounder - was a #4 overall pick who was planted at RT for his whole career.
  2. Seumalo was a 2016 3rd rounder who's spent half his career on the bench or on IR.
  3. Mailata was a 7th rounder in 2018 who didn't see the field until October of his 3rd seasons when he was still backing up Jason Peters in 2020 (leading to 11 starts that year) & was good enough to make Peters expendable in 2021 (also pouncing on the opportunity/gamble to extend him at just $16MM per). He was 370 pounds also, but "slimmed" down to under 350 and while he still misses 2-3 games per year, it's nowhere near Becton's missed time.
  4. Kelce is ****ing 35 years old and was a 6th round pick way back when the NFL had its last labor/owner lockout in 2011.
  5. Dickerson was a high 2nd rounder hand-picked by Kelce as someone to pass his torch to at center. In the meantime he's doing just fine at guard, to the point they may just leave him there & promote this year's 2nd rounder Jurgens to starting C for their post-Kelce era.

BTW with Dickerson and Jurgens there, they may not re-sign Kelce. If they win the SB he may call it quits & go out on top, but we should go balls deep on signing him if he's available, then still draft his eventual replacement, but that replacement doesn't have to be found so early with such a good placeholder for another 1-2 years. I'm totally fine with drafting a center on day 2, but the problem is they can't have too big of an opening on draft day in case prospect value doesn't meet the team's pick slot when the Jets are on the clock. Plus anybody can be a bust, or just not ready to start yet right away.

With a better line and ANY QB they would have .. better OL leads to less headless chicken acts.
