Becton update

Lower probability, but what if Becton has a good to great year?  We know we're not going to exercise his 5th year beforehand so he'll become an unrestricted free agent in March 2024.

1. Do we franchise him?

2022 cost for 'Offensive Lineman' = $16.66M.  If he succeeds at Left Tackle, then that is roughly the 10th highest paid.  If Right Tackle, then that would make him the 8th highest paid.

2. Do we franchise and then seek to trade him to a team that is willing to make a long term investment?

3. Do we look to extend him?  Least likely given his injury and maturity issues but it's an option if Becton surprisingly grows up.

Most of us have completely written off Becton on the Jets past 2023 but that might not be the case if he stays healthy & performs knowing this is his chance at another pay day.

My own vote is #2 which means we can still salvage some potentially meaningful value from this pick.

I’ve bounced around on drafting a LT, but if one is there this year then take him. Have a camp battle between the rookie, Becton,  Brown at LT. Whoever wins starts. The loser starts at RT. If Becton plays well then tag and trade. I don’t trust him at all to still give effort after getting a big contract

Jamal Adams is about to finally be a difference maker too..

We traded him for 2 first round picks so would love for Becton to continue to be compared to him long into the future.

It's in all of our interests for Becton to defy odds and have a big year so we can unload him in a trade to a team willing to take on the risk that this was motivated by a contract year.

Dude is going to ball out this year. If he doesn’t then his career is on the line. Just had a kid and no guaranteed job after this year. That’ll give you some motivation

You're aware he's been paid several millions of dollars already, right?

Presuming he didn't waste it all, he could literally already be set for life, generationally at that, his kids wouldn't have to work if he managed his money already in-hand correctly.

Not sure that's the motivation you think it is.
