Former Jets Scout On Tanner McKee...

THE BARON

Recommended Posts

This is a few months old, but this former Jets scout sees exactly what I do...

Once again... They can skip the bloated contract with Rodgers, Carr, Jimmy G and get a long term solution at QB in the draft AFTER getting an extra pick by trading down in the 1st round and then taking McKee....

It is all there for the taking.  A real QB at low price + a bonus pick.

If JD does not act to draft McKee, at the end of the 2023 season, Jets fans will be saying "we blew it again"

and...

"It took me less than a minute of watching Tanner McKee’s game film to see that he’s got it.

Actually, 59 seconds to be exact.

The rest of the game film from that point forward only served as further confirmation about the Stanford quarterback.

McKee has greatness written all over him."

You may very well be right but this reminds me of Jodie Mac on the radio a Saturday morning in the early fall banging away at the jets have to draft mason Rudolph.

jodie loved the kid and was all in

I dig.  I pretty sure of myself, though... As sure as I was about ZW being a world class flop in the NFL before he was drafted

I know nothing about this kid, never saw him play - but I just looked this up.  UGH!

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/tanner-mckee/32004d43-4b15-6404-8b65-d2cfdf887c42

Overview
Long, tall pocket passer with better arm strength than arm talent as a passer. McKee throws with an unorthodox delivery that becomes even more irregular when he feels rushed. He can make all the NFL throws and delivers a tight spiral with good velocity on intermediate and deep throws to the field side. However, his heavy feet and a lack of agility limit his effectiveness outside of the pocket and make him a magnet for pass rushers when protection becomes spotty. McKee clearly improved his throwing process in 2022, but he might lack the decision-making and functional mobility to make it in today’s NFL.
Strengths
  • Excellent size.
  • Release looked tighter and quicker in 2022.
  • Ball comes out easily and with a tight spiral.
  • Has access to drive velocity when he throws in rhythm.
  • Adequate anticipation into intermediate windows.
  • No trouble making longer field-side throws.
Weaknesses
  • TD-INT ratio of 3:3 over his final seven games.
  • Clunky feet in play-action and on rollouts.
  • Struggles with consistent ball placement on all three levels.
  • Process becomes too rushed with pressure mounting.
  • Aims his short throws at times.
  • Missing athleticism to work successfully off-schedule.
  • Poor mobility can put him in distress.

He’s got good size but his throwing motion is awkward. I think the trend is towards more mobile QBs. This is something that was attractive about Zach and was showcased in the Super Bowl with Mahomes and hurts. Unless this guy has good footwork like Brady to move just enough he’s just not that good.   Almost better to re- sign mfw or work with streveler.

"trends" lead to playing follow the leader rather than being the leader.  who would turn down tom brady, joe burrow, p. manning, dan marino, etc...

the trend that is always in style is "PRODUCTION"

that  can come in all styles and sizes.

I like McKee more for the un-measurables than what his combine chart will be.

JD wants FREAKS.

I want football players.

All the points below were more a result of awful offensive line play and almost ZERO help from a very meager pass catching stable.  McKee is accurate.  These weakness points are coming from eyes without a brain.

That’s true. The nfl is a copy cat league. At some point the statue type QBs will be an oddity when all the other teams have mobile QBs. But the problem with the statue is that he needs a superior oline and quick decision making and release. If McKee has these other attributes then maybe he can play and win.

Hard to say about the statue QB's.  If they can see the pressure and take that golden step in the right direction like Brady, Manning or Borrow, they dont need an all-world offensive line.  Just a good one.  The QB position is best when the QB is a superb passer rather than a decent passer that doubles as a running back.  And those exciting double threat QB's always wear our much quicker than the classic passers.  It seems like only the very big running QB's like Josh Allen and Cam Newton can absorb the punishment and not break their ass or wear out inside of three years.

But that is not to say that a statue QB prospect will or will not work out.  If they can read the defense, take that golden step in the pocket and release quickly, then they are good to go in the NFL  If they cant see the pressure, step to avoid and deliver quickly, they are going to fail badly regardless of how strong of an arm they have or how accurate they are when not under pressure.

Hard to say for sure until they get on the field.

is this the same touch hole who is always sh*tting on the Jets while carrying around his "former Jets scout" badge?

And highly unlikely he was ever a scout.  I had a brief exchange with him years ago and he told me he was the genius who decoded Denver's offense prior to the AFCCG, passed it along to Parcells and Belichick and then they fired him days after the game.

Riiiiiight.
