Texas Christian Horned Frogs v Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter, one of the top prospects in the 2023 NFL draft, was present at the scene of a teammate’s fatal car crash on January 15, drove away, and misled police about it afterward, according to a new report.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitutions reports that Carter first told the police he was nearly a mile away when the fatal crash happened, then said he was behind the other vehicle and could see its taillights, and then said he was alongside the car when it crashed.

Georgia football staffer Chandler LeCroy was driving the car that crashed, and Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock was a passenger. Both died. Another football staffer and another football player were injured.

Police questioned Carter about whether he was racing the other car, and Carter denied it.

The official story until now had been that it was a single-car accident caused by LeCroy driving too fast. It is not clear whether Carter could be in legal jeopardy based on the new information that his car was also at the scene. Carter has not commented publicly.

Carter was ticketed in September for driving 89 mph in a 45 mph zone.

I believe the police have access to surveillance video to determine of Carter or anyone else was racing.  I believe that Devin Willock and Chandler Lecroy who passed in the accident were clocked at 80+ in a 40 mph zone.

As far as a know, I do not believe the surveillance tape has been released publicly.

A young man and a young woman with their whole lives ahead of them are gone.  If he was racing the other vehicle, and lied to police about it, Carter should be thankful if the worst that happens to him is dropping in the draft.

I guess this is what Mcshay was referring to a month ago.

my friend coached Devin before he transferred to PC and I played with his brother years ago. Terrible Terrible story and I feel for that family.  Both sons passed away as a result of car accidents.

Yup.  Just an awful and senseless tragedy in so many ways.  And it was so avoidable.  Heart goes out to both the Willock and Lecroy families.  How does Devin's family ever get past losing two sons the same way.

Who picks a street with a posted 45 MPH speed limit to race on?

You obviously did not grow up in Queens.  Some of the fatal racing accidents I saw through the years were a reported 80-100 MPH cmamro race on Queens Blvd in Rego Park (4 dead 2 burnt to a crisp) and Francis Lewis Blvd in bayside.  Multiple fatalities. But the worst was the homeowner who poured  grease or cooking oil on Francis Lewis tryong to teach them a lesson that actually was determined to be the catalyst to the fatalties.

This will save some team from over drafting the player.

Carter is this years most overhyped for value player in the draft.

On top of this issue he declined to do drills at the combine.

Has had injury issues, not a sack monster.

This years Jordan Davis.

As always, as a DT he will get the 'might be the best player in the draft moniker'

Its tragic and just a lesson to anyone young looking to race or anything late at night.  It never ends well.   I'm not sure you can ever fully emotionally recover from this sort of thing.  I dont think I ever met anyone in the family just Devin and his brother John.  Great kids though, such a terrible situation.

Reckless driving is a misdemeanor. I don't see how they can blame him for the other driver losing control of the vehicle, unless he made contact with it before it crashed.

Happens all the time with street racing deaths. In most states if someone suffers injury or death while you're engaging in illicit or dangerous activity that contributed to the consequences, they can charge all parties involved, not just those directly part of the collision.

Overdrafting in the draft is always amazing to watch. Every year we hear from GMs that the 40 does not matter, workouts don't matter in shorts, etc...and then every year several people skyrocket in the draft because of these exact things. Like Walker over Hutchinson. Walker was probably a 2nd rounder with his production. It will happen again this year.

He also lied to police during the investigation.
