Saleh Wants Mike White Back

Recommended Posts

The team most closely connected to a big-ticket quarterback addition, the Jets have maintained Zach Wilson still has a place on the roster. New York’s offseason blueprint may also involve bringing back the QB who replaced Wilson, Sam Robinson of Pro Football Rumors reports.

Mike White is in the Jets’ plans; they are keeping close tabs on him. Robert Saleh said the veteran passer “should be” back on the roster, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. White is a free agent, and he joins a host of bridge- or backup-type quarterbacks available this year. That should make the popular Jet affordable, but he will soon be free to negotiate with other teams.

For a quarterback who began the past two seasons as a backup, White went through two of the more eventful years for a recent reserve. He became the first Jets QB to surpass 400 passing yards in a game since Vinny Testaverde in his debut — an upset win over the Bengals in 2021 — but threw four interceptions against the Bills before returning to the bench. White was not the team’s preferred option to replace Wilson to start last season, sitting behind Joe Flacco, but once again did so after leapfrogging the aging vet on the depth chart in-season. White injected life into a woeful New York passing attack upon supplanting Wilson, but injuries once again intervened. White, 27, finished the season with five broken ribs.

Carr with White as the backup?  Trade wilson for a 5th?

you sign Carr, Zach is gone. can't commit to a 5th year option on Z. have to hope you can draw up a few plays for Z in preseason and make him look good enough to move him.

Why wouldn’t the Texans do that with Davis Mills?

Valid point, he just had a disastrous 2nd year and White commands respect a lesson a rookie needs to learn as early as possible. Just a thought.

Good point, White seems to command respect.  Have no idea what teammates think of Mills.  I was thinking Mills knows the locker and does stay healthy

They will make White a decent back-up offer. He clearly wants to be a starter- and should probably go somewhere where he will get that opportunity. If Mike White strikes out on a chance to sign somewhere as a potential starter, I could see him come back for backup money.

But its all relative. It all depends on who the Jets end up with as their starter and how much he will cost. It all depends on how their cap will look. Mike White IS NOT going to be brought back here to start. And (for better or worse) backup QB is LOW PRIORITY for JD. Especially with the Jets verbally (and financially) committed to Zach.

Odds are the Jets get a high priced vet starter and Zach ends up being the backup with a dirt cheap 3rd stringer. JMHO.

One season at a time. There is no way Wilson should be Qb2 going into camp. having over a yr wether to decide to pick up 5th yr option on Wilson. While the jets compete for playoff run with vet qb and solid backup like white, let Wilson “ reset “ all yr on a side show. Which was plan until White got hurt.

It's funny PepPep I saw that avatar picture of Jumbo Elliot watching his game-tying TD catch on the "Jumbo-tron" and knew instantly what it was from. The Monday Night Miracle was  a night I will never forget. That was back when the Dolphins were our most-hated rival.

If we lose out on rodgers and Carr and they are thinking of signing jimmy G, Better get a very capable backup for when he gets hurt. JD and Saleh have to have a solid backup qb as high priority. Otherwise they are done here if starter goes down midway through good season and Zach comes in a tanks it.. He cannot be trusted as the 2 next yr

Sure, but RIGHT NOW the priority is to get Carr or Rodgers or another high priced vet. Nobody said anything about Jimmy G. If they bring Jimmy G in, yes, of course they need to think about a capable backup. But then again, you can't pay x3 QBs. You can't have Zach taking up 10mil, Jimmy G taking up 30+mil and White taking up 10+ mil of your cap. And why sign two 'injury prone' QBs in FA? Your insurance for Jimmy G is Mike White????

Look, my point is, while the Jets are saying all the right things for a potential reunion down the line with Mike White. Right now, priorities are definitely elsewhere. And unless he agrees to come back as a backup and probably on a pretty team friendly deal, I doubt we see him in a Jet uniform next year.

Hughes said the Jets’ biggest fear is cutting ties with ZW and he succeeds somewhere else ?

So they’d rather carry his dead weight 9M per salary on the books and “not my fault” attitude in the locker room for the next 2 seasons purely based on fear that there’s a 10% chance or whatever he turns into Mahomes once he lands in another city

And people wonder why the franchise has been stuck in neutral for 50+ years

Doesn't matter because we'll never win a championship w/Mike White. /80logicreversi

Derek Carr making upwards of $35M per year or whatever to be our locked-in QB1 for the next 3 years is quite a different discussion/calculus than bringing back Mike White as the QB2 / QB1b.

Consider this:  How happy do you think Vikings fans are with Kirk Cousins at the moment?  That's roughly what we can expect to be feeling about Derek Carr if you hopped in a time machine to travel to 2025/2026, in a universe where Carr ends up a Jet.

Furthermore:  Consider that Mike Maccagnan, the worst GM in NFL history, wanted to pay Cousins even MORE than the Vikings did.  Sound judgment there.

I'll take back White in a heart beat. If Berrios makes that catch in Minnesota, we might have been sky high. White was without Breece Hall and AVT for a boost in the run game. With White at the helm and with those guys on the shelf we turned into a shutgun spread offense.

Sign the guy for cheap long term and roll with him from opening day.

Saleh generally only speaks well of players. I wouldn't take that comment to have any real meaning.

I don't think Douglas has ever said a lot about White but his one year deal for last year didn't speak of a high commitment. My guess is either Douglas doesn't offer a contract or it's another short term contract for an unimpressive amount of money. If that's the case I also suspect White wants to go somewhere he can compete for the starting job or at least have some security as a backup. White must know he's not any part of a discussion as a starter with this team.
