Merged Carr to Saints Thread

Recommended Posts

Derek Carr has made it clear that he intends for his free agent process to be a lengthy one. For at least one of the teams he has met with, though, a quick ending would be preferred, Adam La Rose of Pro Football Rumors reports.

During an appearance on the Official Jets Podcast, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted that the Saints are “ready” to sign Carr. He added that they “want to get something done” with Carr, illustrating how well the two meetings which have taken place between the parties have gone. New Orleans has long been connected to the 31-year-old, who is the top quarterback on the market at this time.

When a trade was thought to be a possibility, the Saints were reportedly in agreement with the Raiders on compensation after Carr’s first visit to New Orleans. The four-time Pro Bowler forced Vegas to release him, though, not as a sign of disinterest in the Saints but rather a means of allowing himself to hit the open market and leverage the best possible contract for the next chapter of his career. That move opened up the number of suitors interested in at least a short-term QB upgrade.

New Orleans faced a difficult cap situation last offseason, but general manager Mickey Loomis carved out enough space to make the team a serious contender for Deshaun Watson. After the latter was ultimately traded to the Browns, though, the Saints elected to use a pairing of Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton under center in 2023. Their collective performance left plenty to be desired, and it would come as no surprise if Carr or a similar veteran were brought in to solidify the position.

New Orleans has begun this year’s cap gymnastics, but they still have a long way to go. The Saints are currently more than $30MM over the cap, and not much is certain for them under center. Dalton is a pending free agent, and one year remains on Winston’s contract. Releasing the former first overall pick would yield $4.4MM in savings, a relatively modest amount but one which would nevertheless move the team closer to being able to afford the $35MM AAV Carr is believed to be seeking.

The Saints and Jets met with Carr not only last month, but during this week’s combine as well. Loomis and head coach Dennis Allen spoke positively about their sit-down, and their support of the potential of a deal taking shape. The Panthers, another team which could be a significant player in this year’s quarterback market, is also set to meet with Carr, though. Not surprisingly, Fowler adds that the former second-rounder is likely to remain patient in the name of setting up a bidding war for his services, especially if Aaron Rodgers and/or Lamar Jackson don’t end up becoming available.

i'd imagine the jets are ready too.  if they weren't, they probably wouldn't have taken a second meeting.

Jets are waiting on Rodgers.  Rodgers is option 1 by a lot.  Until Rodgers signs with the Jets or goes somewhere else the Jets aren't signing anyone.

They're spending time with Carr in case Rodgers falls through - doing their Due Diligence, but don't expect the Jets to do anything until Rodgers is signed.

I don't understand why fans aren't understanding that both these QBs control the process.....it doesn't matter what the Saints or Jets are ready to do.

Well, the Saints can make him an offer that's too good to refuse.  It's surely possible.  Probably in Carr's best interest to wait out the Rodgers process - but you don't know for sure.

If the Jets trade 13 for a declining rental on a team that's not ready to compete for a superbowl, I will lose my f*cking mind and my lunch. If they trade if they trade more than 13 (ESPECIALLY TWO FIRSTS) for said declining rental head case, I tap out. That might finally be the breaking point for me and this mess of a franchise.

I'm 100% with you but I feel like a 1st is a foregone conclusion at this point.  Maybe it's next years - but I think the Jets are too committed at this point.

If the Saints have been ready to sign him, as multiple reports have indicated and Carr wanted the Saints, he would have signed.  If he wasn’t interested in the Jets why hasn’t he?

Needs the jets to increase the saints offer.  If the jets really really wanted carr woody would throw enough money at him and the deal would be done.  And carr knows this.

Desperate men do irrational things, and JD is a desperate man.

I'm sure New Orleans is ready and if NOLA was Carr's preferred destination then he would have already signed.

I think Carr really likes the Saleh "good vibes only" gimmick and probably Joe Douglas' down-to-earth "I'm a ball player at heart" gimmick. So he'll wait until Rodgers and the Jets stop playing "just the tip" and see if it's in or if its out.

This is sad but true I suspect.  On the upside, AR does save the job of whom might very well become the best GM in franchise history so there is that.

The Jets are not trading number 13 for Rodgers. It will be a conditional 3rd next year with the possibility of becoming a 2nd if Playoffs a first if SB. If the Packers want to unload Rodgers and his salary if they can't come to an agreement, they are in a tough spot as well.

I can see a 3rd this year and a conditional next year that escalates depending on how Rodgers does.  But it’s hard to see a scenario where douglas trades 13 this year.  His trades have been just amazing and i doubt he gets ripped off on this one.

This is the second time in four years the Jets have entered the off season without a functional NFL QB.

Carr has made it a point to say multiple times he was gonna take his time and most interested in fit....these teams have had meetings with Carr and his people I'm sure the process is understood....at this point I think if Carr signals he wants to play for the Jets they will sign him even Rodgers supporters think it's time for a decision...if it comes out later that Carr wanted to play for the Jets and they turned him down to wait for Rodgers and he went back to GB people can criticize the team then but I don't think that's what's happening.

Or he’s stringing the Saints along to increase the Jets offer?
Jets are waiting on Rodgers, everyone knows this, including Carr.  He’s not stupid.
He’s not using the Jets to up the Saints offer.  He’s waiting and hoping that Rodgers doesn’t become available to the Jets.
Either way, nowhere has it been said he’s ready to sign with NO, only in someone’s opinion that they’d like to sign Carr

If Rodgers doesn’t go to the jets then carr can play the jets against the saints.
