jackhuntr
The NFL announced on Thursday it has awarded 37 compensatory picks to 16 teams for the 2023 NFL Draft, which will be held April 27-29 in Kansas City, Missouri. A pair of NFC West teams led the way, with the 49ers receiving a league-high seven selections and the Rams netting four. The 37 compensatory picks include five special selections that were awarded at the end of the third round to teams that have had a minority employee hired as a head coach or primary football executive by another club. Three of those picks were awarded to San Francisco. The special compensatory picks were instituted as an amendment to the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement in an effort to promote equal employment opportunities within NFL teams. As for the compensatory picks awarded that were not based on coaching or executive hires, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks, per the league. The compensatory picks are positioned from Round 3 to Round 7 based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The formula that determines compensatory free agents is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Below is the full list of compensatory picks awarded to teams ahead of this year’s draft (special compensatory picks denoted by an asterisk): ROUND 3 96) Arizona Cardinals 97) Washington Commanders 98) Cleveland Browns* 99) San Francisco 49ers* 100) Kansas City Chiefs* 101) San Francisco 49ers* 102) San Francisco 49ers* ROUND 4 135) New England Patriots ROUND 5 167) Los Angeles Rams 168) Arizona Cardinals 169) Dallas Cowboys 170) Green Bay Packers 171) Los Angeles Rams 172) New York Giants 173) San Francisco 49ers 174) Las Vegas Raiders 175) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 176) Dallas Cowboys

Popular Post Embrace the Suck
I wish that practice (compensatory picks) would end. Why do teams deserve extra picks for not resigning or signing players? 8

Beerfish
20 of the 37 going to playoff teams. I stand by the thread I made saying this formula needs to be revisited, not abolished but relooked at. A lot of the advantages go to the good teams, keeping them perpetually stocked and softening loses which they apply to the formula the next year, meanwhile the poor teams are short every year have to use FA every year.

SackExchangeNYJ
Weird not seeing the NFL give the Patriots 2/3rds of the picks like other years. 1

Easy to say play better but the deck is stacked against you and the deck is stacked in favour of the teams already better and more so each year. On top of the usual just letting go and signing free agents the minority hiring comp picks are even more of a factor. Then with all of the extra draft capital the good teams can trade up and move around in the draft. It's a huge huge advantage.

SackExchangeNYJ
What bothers me most about the comp pick formula is that the NFL insists it consistently uses its formula across the board, yet it refuses to publicly state what exactly that formula is. It's shady as all hell.

JoeNamathsFurCoat
I think one of the 3rd rounders was automatic for having a minority HC hired off their staff, DeMeco Ryans. An additional spin off the “Rooney rule”.
Jetsfan80
The draft already favors the bad teams that get to pick first. Comp picks reward teams that run their program well. It's a good balance. Quit whining. 1 1
jamesr
This is why I kind of want to keep guys like Lawson, Davis etc. they can turn into comp picks if held on to for just 1 more yearThat would require them signing decent sized contracts somewhere else once they leave. And by decent I mean top 10 or so for their position. And we'd also need to sign fewer FAs than we lose.Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

But comp picks in general are a good system.
BeaconJet
Im not opposed to the comp pick system, but getting 3 3rd rounders does seem excessive. Granted one was for the minority hiring apparently, but maybe a little tweak to the system is in order... weight more of those picks in the later rounds perhaps? Not everyone who needs a reward gets one. Such is life. And the good news? Any team can get to that place if they step up their game. It acts as an incentive. Draft well. Develop well. Replace the players you lose well and get some picks in the process. It's what Douglas is trying to do here.

It's what Douglas is trying to do here. I'll say what I said in my other thread why is the actual draft in reverse order then? Reward with comp picks, do not reward with regular picks. SF getting a full 7 more picks than other teams goes too far. It becomes a perpetual motion machine. Let players go, restock with cheap picks because you have way more than other teams. Add to your comp pick formula, rinse and repeat.
FootballLove
They should award comp picks to teams that were F'd over by the refs the previous season.
