Comp picks out....49ers get 7, 3 in the 3rd round

Recommended Posts

The NFL announced on Thursday it has awarded 37 compensatory picks to 16 teams for the 2023 NFL Draft, which will be held April 27-29 in Kansas City, Missouri.

A pair of NFC West teams led the way, with the 49ers receiving a league-high seven selections and the Rams netting four. The 37 compensatory picks include five special selections that were awarded at the end of the third round to teams that have had a minority employee hired as a head coach or primary football executive by another club. Three of those picks were awarded to San Francisco. The special compensatory picks were instituted as an amendment to the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement in an effort to promote equal employment opportunities within NFL teams.

As for the compensatory picks awarded that were not based on coaching or executive hires, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks, per the league. The compensatory picks are positioned from Round 3 to Round 7 based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The formula that determines compensatory free agents is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.

Below is the full list of compensatory picks awarded to teams ahead of this year’s draft (special compensatory picks denoted by an asterisk):

Sucks for us. So is that how it works they just cut the line?
its worse than a chat n cut.

so our 4,5 and 6 rounders will be almost 5,6 and 7 guys

This is why I kind of want to keep guys like Lawson, Davis etc. they can turn into comp picks if held on to for just 1 more year

It has been like this for about 20 years now.  You just noticed?

20 of the 37 going to playoff teams.  I stand by the thread I made saying this formula needs to be revisited, not abolished but relooked at.  A lot of the advantages go to the good teams, keeping them perpetually stocked and softening loses which they apply to the formula the next year, meanwhile the poor teams are short every year have to use FA every year.

play better football. problem solved.  i like it because i like any policy that doesnt sacrifice a well built franchise to the altar of parity.

Easy to say play better but the deck is stacked against you and the deck is stacked in favour of the teams already better and more so each year.  On top of the usual just letting go and signing free agents the minority hiring comp picks are even more of a factor.  Then with all of the extra draft capital the good teams can trade up and move around in the draft.  It's a huge huge advantage.

ok then let me clarify. draft better players, hire better coaches, play better football.

I wish that practice (compensatory picks) would end. Why do teams deserve extra picks for not resigning or signing players?

I think a few of those comp picks are for getting minority coaches hired to other teams. Other than that they make no sense

That would require them signing decent sized contracts somewhere else once they leave. And by decent I mean top 10 or so for their position.

And we'd also need to sign fewer FAs than we lose.

The draft already favors the bad teams that get to pick first.
Comp picks reward teams that run their program well.
It's a good balance.  Quit whining.
7 comp picks is obscene ... That's essentially an entire Draft.

If they run their program well they don't need the extra picks.

It's not about need.  It's a reward.  Not everyone who needs a reward gets one.  Such is life.

And the good news?  Any team can get to that place if they step up their game.  It acts as an incentive.

Draft well.  Develop well.  Replace the players you lose well and get some picks in the process.  It's what Douglas is trying to do here.

I'll say what I said in my other thread why is the actual draft in reverse order then?  Reward with comp picks, do not reward with regular picks.

SF getting a full 7 more picks than other teams goes too far.   It becomes a perpetual motion machine.  Let players go, restock with cheap picks because you have way more than other teams.  Add to your comp pick formula, rinse and repeat.
