Jets offseason plan if Rodgers is added

It looks like Rodgers is  happening.  Assuming the Jets surrender one or two picks this year to lock him up, they'll have approximately:

$3 million in cap space.

4-5 draft picks.

What do you do next?

You restructure a lot and go all in to win over the next two years.  Worry about 3 year from now then.

Who else is left to re-structure?  They did four or five guys this past week.

Going to add years to Mosley's deal?

Extend Lawson or cut him outright?

I'm not a GM but there are ways to free up space if you're willing to kick the can down the road.   The Jets will sign more than $3mm in cap space.

Yes, I suspect you cut Davis and Lawson and there's 20mm - neither of them are necessary

I think Lawson is a goner.  Don't see how they can restructure him.  Same with Davis, especially if all these rumors of WRs wanting to come here with Rodgers are true(OBJ, Thielen, Cobb).  Lawson makes sense though especially if they want JJ and Clemons to take on bigger roles next year.

I'm also hoping McGovern walks and we walk away with one of the big-3 centers from the draft, who all should be potential starters from day one:  Schmitz, Tippmann, Wypler.  If the 2nd is the pick that goes for Rodgers(this year at least), I'd be looking at a trade down in the 1st to try and get back in the 2nd round.

Depends on the trade but here’s my hope for the next couple of days.

1) sign Jordan Poyer. Trade/Cut Whitehead

2) sign Lazard, trade/cut Corey Davis

3) restructure Mosley/JFM and use the money to bring back Rankins and Kwon

4) restructure Lawson (ie pay cut - to $10M bonus and 2 base) or you can use void years if $15M is his market value

5) use remaining cap to bring in Cobbs and bring back McGovern

The low hanging fruit cap wise is still there; Lawson and Davis.

Not sure anything if off the table if Rodgers comes. Like the Saints have shown us - if you want a player there’s always a way to make it work

Right, and that way to make it work is to let guys walk that you would have liked to keep or to cut guys.

  • Cut Mosley = save $17MM
  • Cut Lawson = save $15MM
  • Cut A.Davis + Bryce Hall = save $5.5MM
  • Others that can wait until they sign someone else first = C.Davis ($10.5MM), Whitehead ($7MM), & possibly Brown ($9MM).

Never mind new additions can and will be backloaded (Rodgers first & foremost).

Agree.  They may not really have a choice.

I'd even add Whitehead to the primary list.

Do you believe free agent WRs are going to offer a Rodgers discount? Because right now at $10 million,  Davis may be the best deal available.

There actually is some wiggle room with Mosely, not to mention his cap hit drops significantly as a post-June 1 cut.

Cutting Lawsom saves you over $15 million

Cutting Davis saves you $10.5 million

Cutting Whitehead saves you $7 million

Cutting Ashtyn Davis saves you almost $3 million

There is some wiggle room in JLM's contract as well.

Still plenty that can, and will be, done.

Will have to be done.  Some I'm fine with.  Others, I worry about the hole it creates on the roster.

Fletcher Cox re-signed with PHI. Jets wanted him badly… outside of the Rodgers guys he was their top FA they wanted to bring in (top person on D).

Going to be interesting to monitor how they fill the holes at DT. Solomon Thomas will be back, but need to replace Rankins and Shepherd. Paying close attention to this Jalen Carter situation…

Just curious - since one of the biggest criticisms of Green Bay the past decade was never spending early draft picks on offense to support Rodgers.

Will there be pressure to use that 13 on offense coming from Rodgers, or from the owner?

If Carter falls...
