Not holding my breath. JD needs to sign a number of FAs to solidify the D-line and O-line, as well as a FS. I guess we will see how things shake out. Bu I highly doubt the Jets will get comp picks this year.

Those comp picks would be for next year.

Also don't expect "a number of FAs" for the lines to take away picks:

They're clearly looking at a veteran center to have in place before heading into the draft, but that'll be offset by the loss of McGovern.

Signing another starting tackle of significance seems unlikely unless they cut Brown to do so. If they feel they have their starting LT (Brown), RT (Becton or Mitchell), and an emergency swing tackle in AVT, the type they're more likely to add is going to be offset by the loss of Fant, who hasn't signed anywhere yet.

Also consider additions may not be pure UFAs but might also come in the form of players cut for cap reasons (and wouldn't take away from the formula).

1) You mean McGovern (McDermott was signed by the Pats during the 22 season after we cut him)

2) No, he wasn't. There are 2 Connor McGoverns in the NFL; the other Connor McGovern signed with the Bills. Ours is still a FA

Thank you for this! Randall Cobb & Calias Campbell wouldn't count against us if we sign them. Both were on voided contracts, not expiring.

I could see JD hits UDFA HARD THIS YEAR and can also waits to see what shakes loose after the draft and maybe into the summer.

When is it that signing FAs no longer count against the comp pick formula? After April?

There are like 40ish legitimate roster guys on the team right now (not counting Rodgers) and six draft picks at the moment. Big holes are iOL and iDL and those were mostly filled by backup types who might not count against the comp formula.

I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility they go cheap enough the rest of the way and/or re-sign guys and they get comp picks. Honestly it’s a great opportunity to get some with guys like Herbig and Shepherd signing deals that could have then qualifying, and as this roster gets older and guys on rookie deals get re-signed they’re going to need to have a bunch of cheap guys filling out the roster to balance that out.

Yep, particularly with high-dollar contracts going to some of those vets, including at QB.

As we get into this second-wave/discount shopping stage of FA, I'd expect Douglas to be looking particularly hard at guys like this, whose signings won't impact the comp pick formula.

Someone brought this up to me the other night. I honestly hadn't considereal it til then. It could be similar to thr Leonard Fournette move if you can get him for the Vet Min. I down know if Dallas is on the hook for any salary though, that's the big question.

I don't particularly want to pay much money when we have such great value in the RB room

Depends on the dollars, same way Feeney's deal does. The line is for counting is roughly 2.5M APY

That said, if he's a starter because he's good enough to start ... well, you'll happily lose a comp pick for someone who gives you that production at that price. Only way the Jets can be disappointed in the outcome here is if he's forced into starting because plan A (draft pick, I assume) tanks or someone gets hurt, in which case that's why you have depth, but the lost comp pick will be adding insult to injury.

There's more to comp picks than just net gain / loss and APY. To qualify as a CFA (Compensatory Free Agent) they need to rank within the top 35% of all players in the league.

Even after that, there are only 32 comp picks total, so not all teams eligible for a comp pick will even get one.

As things stand I don't see any of the guys that we lost ranking in the top 35% of all league players (no, not even MFW).
