This is some real mental gymnastics to try to justify your answer. You can't say it's a bad trade but it was worth it. Being worth it makes it a good trade. You can't eat your cake and have it too

No mental gymnastic.  It's reality.

I later elaborated. I can bet my life savings on a roulette wheel.

Smart bet? Of course not.

Worth it if it hits.  Sure.

A bad trade is a bad trade - but if it works, with the value of hindsight you can say it worked out and giving up the two picks was worth the move.

Either way - a bad trade is a bad trade.  But in the off chance it works out - great, just doesn't make it smart.

Lol.
better analogy.

First, for the record, I made the same point as you in a post just before the one you quoted.

Worth it, yes.  Good trade, no.  I even said 5 1st I would say it’s worth it.

I could go to a casino, play roulette, bet my house on #12.

Smart idea to make that bet? I think not.

If #12 hits, was it worth it? Sure.  I never have to work another day in my life.  So good bet.

Rodgers will be a Jet and it’s starting to look like we’re giving up 2 2’s for him.  It might work out, it might not.

Look, I’m super exited for him to be a Jet.  But I think, under the circumstances, we’re far overpaying.
I’m not going to harp on it once it’s done.  I’ll be happy to have him - and the shot at a Super Bowl.
I just expected Joe to do better.

No no no no. That Roulette bet is an awful bet and 100% risk. If it hits, you're lucky is what you are. Nothing else. You're risking a roof over your head.

That would be like the Jets trading Rodgers for all their draft picks this year and next year. If it fails, you're f'd. If you win a superbowl? You're one lucky SOB.

Trading two second round picks is like putting 1000 bucks down. You'll be OK if you miss. It'll suck for sure but you won't be homeless.

I would propose that these guys will be homeless if they do not make the playoffs.  Therefore, what they have if they lose is irrelevant.  You can't get any more fired than fired.  They need to hit this and win.

Now you're just arguing the levels of value.

The point wasn't really about that - it was about how it can be a poor trade - but in hindsight end up being worth it.  I was told that's not a reasonable way to look it - and I simply disagree.

While I will be excited to have Rodgers - I'm not expecting a 40 year old, already declining, coming off his worst year - QB - who just three weeks ago was 90% sure he was going to retire - on a team that won 7 games last year - to win a Super Bowl.

While it's exciting and we can enjoy the ride this spring a summer - If you truly look at this realistically - a Championship is incredibly far fetched.

thats not a great analogy. because betting your life savings isn't really the same risk the jets would be taking on by risking 2 2nd draft picks. actually it's not really even close.
