April Fools

There is precedent for the Jets making big QB news on April 1.  Way back in 1977, on April 1, the Jets waived Joe Namath.  Story below from the NY Times on April 2, 1977.

The end of Joe Namath's career as a New York Jet became official yesterday with the familiar, dramatic twists and turns that marked his 12 seasons as the team's quarterback.

The Jets dropped Namath by making him available to any of the other 27 National Football League clubs. In effect, they notified him they would not pick up the option on his $450,000 salary.

Did he feel bad seeing his career as a New Yorker end? “No,” he said. “Some of my best friends were placed on waivers.”

The Jets were forced to place Namath on waivers when their efforts to trade him to the Los Angeles Rams fell through.

Last week the Rams had told Namath and his attorney, Jim Walsh, that they would be interested in Namath. The quarterback then gave the Jets permission to try to trade him to the Rams. He is one of the few players in professional sports who can be traded only with his approval.

But the Jets‐Rams trade talks were weighted in the Rams favor; they knew that if they offered nothing of value for Namath the Jets still would have to unload him. So the Rams could play a waiting game.

For in the waiver route, the teams with the worst records, starting with the American Conference, get a crack at selecting the man whose “guarantee” of a Super Bowl victory impressed his name on a generation of fans.

The trouble is, any team that picks him this way would have to pay him $495,000—this year's salary plus 10 percent. But Namath has the option as a “vested veteran” (a player with four or more years of service) to declare himself a free agent as soon as someone takes him.

He also can become a free agent if none of the 27 other teams claim him. They have 10 days to do that.
