Offensive Line: Do we have room for 2 ‘more’ Centers?

Recommended Posts

Most teams keep 9 offensive linemen, which is what the Jets did last year.

4 OT + 5 IOL

OT:  Most would agree the 4 will be Brown, Becton, Mitchell and pick #13 (or possibly a surprise trade for Rodgers old LT).

IOL:  The Jets 2 interior back-ups to open last season were Herbig and Feeney.

We replaced both early in Free Agency, with Schweitzer and Colon.  Both can play guard or center.

Starting guards AVT & Tomlinson make this 4, seemingly leaving only 1 spot open at a time when there has been plenty of discussion adding both a vet (Ben Jones) AND using a second round pick.

The roster moves to date tell me it’s probably only 1 or the other.

If we get Jones, Colon will be the primary back-up and the Jets will not use a 2nd round pick on Center.

If we go draft, Colon (4th year) and our draft pick have an open competition to start.

How do you see it?

I don't see the utility of drafting the ot4 at 13

And Ben Jones is done as a player

We already went through this. It will likely be OT3, and the OT4 will turn out to be the best if the bunch.

See: Becton/Wirfs draft.

agreed on Been Jones

I meant ot4 on the Jets

Brown Becton Mitchell draft pick

That player might not play

Not the type of pick for an all in year

As the past two seasons have shown the jets almost can’t have enough oline players. I don’t see much problem with who they are bringing or even drafting more with high draft picks. And if they do have centers, can these guys just play center or can they play guard? If so a center and then a couple of center/ guard isn’t a bad thing.

Gotcha.  Though to play devils advocate, a player like Broderick Jones who could benefit from an redshirt year, would be a nice asset to have in the bench for the playoff stretch once our OTs start dropping to PUP/IR the way they have the last three years.

I think adding JSN, a blue chip Center, and DJ Fluker (swing tackle) with a mid round developmental OT (Tyler Steen in the 4th?) is the best way to level up the offense.

It’s a very good point you bring up.

There is a vocal crowd herein that is stating every ‘big’ move has to be done for the immediate pursuit of a Super Bowl run.

I don’t necessarily disagree.

What if they draft a Tackle at #13 who can start at guard for a year in case Tomlinson doesn’t get the performance memo?

He’ll be on the team for sure but the Jets would be wise to have a contingency if he falters again.

Is that what the Jets want from their first round pick — a contingency in year 1 when the team is looking to make a run?  Probably not unless you believe Rodgers is going to be here 2 years and you’re setting yourself up for both years

I get what you're saying it just doesn't feel like something JD will do

If JD believed in planning for failure he would have had a better plan behind Zach than Mike White and Joe Flacco

If we can upgrade the position, Colon-Castillo's contract makes him an easy cut.  Only $250K guaranteed out of a 1 yr, $1.66M contract.  No certainty he makes the team.

If we sign a guy like Jones, and add a guy in the draft, Colon-Castillo could be odd man out at the end of camp.

Given the first three are Brown, Becton, and Mitchell, I would say the odds of the draft pick playing are very good to almost certain.

Good point, I noticed that as well.

I have a feeling the Jets might be pretty high on him.  Read a Ravens site article about how he drew interest from several teams and played very well in his only start last year.

Agree though that the contract does not necessarily line up with that ;).

The problem is that Brown is very old.

You have to act like Becton is a non factor, right now he is a backup looking for playing time.

Mitchell has yet to show he can actually be a starter and has health issues.

If everything with these players goes perfectly we have no need but there is just as big of a chance of two of three being out.
