Why Jets owner Woody Johnson might have held up Aaron Rodgers Trade

The Packers are holding out for what they want right now and that’s a problem I think with the Jets and more specifically with Jets ownership. So where it is, Green Bay is stuck on an asking price of a two [second-round draft pick] this year, a straight-shot one [first-round pick] next year, so no graduation schedule attached to it, and they would be willing to do the 2025…some sort of a draft asset give-back if for some reason Aaron Rodgers doesn’t play in ’24.

They’re saying no we’re not doing the straight-shot one. And I think what [Jets owner] Woody Johnson’s problem is with this is that he looks at Denver and all the assets Denver gave up [for Russell Wilson] … now Seattle is sitting on Denver’s pick at No. 5 because that crashed and burned. I think some of it is the Matt Stafford thing, and now he has a balky elbow … and now Detroit is sitting at six.

All I can say is "Thank God".  My biggest concern in this trade is whether Woody has a spine.  I don't doubt AR's talent.  But I look at his age, cost and erratic personality (though the last doesn't show up in his play) and think its just not worth it.

I watched SB III and I would love to see one more.  But I still would rather see the Jets dig up a journeyman QB and continue to build the team than blow it all on a one year wonder that may or may not work out.

I do not buy this. I think this was an attempt to bash Woody and it backfired. The idea was that leaking that Woody was holding it up would have everyone pile on Woody because everyone thinks everything he does is wrong.

Here's why I don't think it's him. It was a football decision, and a relatively smart one. If Woody is as incompetent as people say, does anyone think it was HIS idea to pursue an insurance policy in case Rodgers left after one season? That is much more likely something Douglas would want. 

Worst part is, this was meant to smear Woody, but in reality, it's a smart move. The whole point of whomever leaked this completely backfired.

That paragraph is confusing. To summarize, GB is asking for a 2nd this year and 1st next year with no conditions. In return, the Jets would get Rodgers and a 2025 pick conditioned on Rodgers playing in 2024.

The story I heard on this was that the jets agreed to a 2 and a 1st next year early on but when Woody heard Rodgers say he was 90% retired on the macafee show he got spooked and said forget it we are not giving up a 1.

I still think the hold up is the money. And the Jets want GB to pick up some of that 100 million plus. Doubtful AR would agree to a pay cut. Or that any other team would pay the entire salary.

I'm with you pal. So completely over this whole thing already. So we'll stink in 2023 and have pick 1, 2, or 3 next April for a QB. Law of averages says we are due to hit on one. I'll take my chances. It is also possible we make the playoffs with a journeyman QB due to the talent on this team anyway and sign or trade for a QB next off season.

a) woody is the one driving the Rodgers deal and is forcing JD to trade for him

I believe it’s only one second round pick. I think woody is concerned about Rodgers only playing for a single season and doesn’t want to give up next years first rounder if that’s the case. I guess they can scale it back to a much later pick or no pick if Rodgers bows out after one season.the big issue is that this seasons second round pick is useless if the deal isn’t done before the draft. If it’s after the draft then maybe the deal will be for next years first round pick.

Just wait until Jets #2 picks are on the clock and lets see what GB does. Are they really gong to pay AR the money due. AR knows the offense. Hold firm on the #1 2023 pick. If they insist on a unconditional #1 pick in 2024 then that is the only pick they get and nothing more.
