Rapoport: Jets and Packers Re-Engage on Aaron Rodgers Trade Talks

After weeks of silence between the two teams, NFL insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that Aaron Rodgers to the Jets trade talks are back on between Green Bay and the Jets.  This, just days after WFAN’s Boomer Esiason saying the deal should be done before the draft.

After a dormant couple weeks, the #Jets and #Packers recently re-engaged on trade talks surrounding star QB Aaron Rodgers, sources say. A deal is not imminent, but the two sides are at least talking — with hopes a deal can (finally) be done this week.

The two clubs have been negotiating intermittently over the past month as the Packers look to unload a player they don’t want and the Jets need.

A variety of rumors in recent weeks have made multiple claims as to why a deal has yet to be completed.  Most recently, Charles Robinson of Yahoo! sports reported that Jets owner Woody Johnson is balking at the idea of a guaranteed first-round pick next season.

In his interview on the Pat McAfee show over a month ago, Rodgers said that his plan was to play for the Jets in 2023, but also that he felt he was “90% retired” just days earlier.  It was the comment regarding retirement that spooked Johnson and led him to shut down the idea of a guaranteed 2024 first-round pick.

Meanwhile, the Packers have said publicly that they don’t want Rodgers back on their roster and are set to pay him roughly $100 million between now and the week after the Super Bowl.  This means they’d obviously like to move the future Hall of Famer to the highest bidder, but with the draft approaching, the Jets are the only team picking up the phone.

If Woody has the courage to walk away, the Jets have the leverage. A good deal for AR is all in the Jets interest. A bad deal hurts the Jets for years to come. 

Johnson has good football advisers. Hope he listens.

I still think it’s a done deal and this is manufactured drama for the off-season.

They are fine-tuning the trade heading into the Draft.  I've always expected it to get done on Draft night depending upon who is on the Board when the Jets get on the clock at 13, 42, or 43.   Compensation seems variable.  Could be a simple as the Jets not being enamored with any one player there at #13, but liking 3 or 4 guys in that area.  They then trade back to #15 with GB who loves someone at #13.  Packers get to say they "got a 1st round pick" for Rodgers even thought the Jets just moved down to #15.  Add a conditional pick in 2024, based on playing time, the Jets making the Playoffs or SB, and voila!  Done deal.  It just smells like a deal that needs to be executed during the Draft to me....but what do I know?!?!?
