Least popular Jets first round pick since?

Say what you want about the player, but it sure seems like the Jets really reached with this pick. Albeit, you never really know for sure.

How often have the Jets made a move like this and been right?

2014 Calvin Pryor: I think most mocks had Jets taking Brandin Cooks if he was available (which he was). That said, I don’t think he was considered a reach where he was taken.

2016 Darron Lee: Same story as Pryor. Not really a reach, but a surprising pick given the position.

2017 Jamal Adams: my least favorite Jets draft pick of all time. I remember really wanting Watson or Mahomes here. Still, not a reach.

The Will McDonald pick is a complete throwback to the 80s/90s Jets drafts. A complete WTF pick. Other teams like the Seahawks and Pats have had plenty of these and have been successful. We shall see what the future holds here.

I will say the Jets appearance in the war room certainly didn’t inspire confidence. Also very little public support on Twitter from players over this pick.

The Quinton Coples pissed me off pretty well. Not as much as Jamal Adams but close.

Coples was a horrendous pick - Melvin Ingram and Chandler Jones were right there, and the Jets picked an interior D-lineman and tried to make him an edge.  Brutal.

Crazy part is he was probably one of the Jets better draft picks. Nothing spectacular but had a nice career as a decent starter on some good jet teams

Of course, he played nearly ten years for the Jets. Definitely a late bloomer though.

I am not blown away with it...  we lose out on a top OLINE man when NE trades back to Pitt.  Then, we take the next coming of Calvin Pryor.

JD is loaded with WTF picks as was Mac and Idzik.

I hope there is a plan to build the Oline.

perceptions are weird.

I hated the milliner pick and I remember everyone I knew in real life agreed with me but I didn’t get that perception online.

the pick this year seems to be the opposite. People I know in real life (along with Mel Kiper, lol) like the pick, but most folks online seem to hate it.

it doesn’t matter either way.

2013 was also one of the worst drafts in recent history. The top 3 picks were Eric Fisher, Luke Joekel, and Dion Jordan.

I think the majority of the kick back here and why this pick isn’t popular is because this kid wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Everyone here assumed it would be an offensive piece. An OT, maybe JSN, maybe we go a little nuts and grab a TE. Maybe a DT. Nobody was looking at / predicting an edge guy with the pick. I know I didn’t pay much attention to that position in the draft so when McDonald’s name was called, it completely caught me off guard. After looking into him, he seems like a solid prospect. I’m not thrilled with the pick but that’s mostly because we really needed it to be used on OL and it didn’t happen. But the the guys weren’t there. They clearly couldn’t trade down, so they went to their board and grabbed a guy they liked. Schmitz is still on the board, hopefully he’ll be there when we make our second pick and we can get ourselves a good prospect at the center position.

This was who I thought of.

I don't hate the pick. If there's anything our D is missing (anything important, so no, not S/LB stuff, you don't use a 1st on that) it's a terror off the edge. If McDonald can be that guy - yes, even as a situational rusher - it's a good pick for a franchise that currently expects to be playing with a lead more than it has been in the recent past. And there's an element of future-planning to it too, with two of our current edges (Lawson and Huff), including our best pass rusher (Huff) on the final year of their deals.

So ... understandable, if they got their evaluation right.

I preferred JSN. But if they weren't taking a WR (and with Wilson, Lazard, and Hardman all on long-term deals, plus Davis as their current No. 2 I can understand why they wouldn't) this wasn't an awful fall-back.
