I don't hate the McDonald pick (as much) after a little film.

Now that the rage of passing on JSN subsided and I've watched some film breakdown on Mcdonald I dont hate the pick as much as I did last night.

Pros: great speed, great bend, great hands at the POA. Better in the run than I would have expected given his style of play.

Cons: Not a ton of power in his game, looks a little lean. 5.5 sacks last year compared to double digits the 2 years prior.

Film Sprinkles:

(☝️Mcdonald is actually the top comment ?)

I actually like the player a lot.  Just hate where we picked him, he is a rotation player who should have gone early 2nd.

Article on his Pro day.

As expected, the star of the show was Will McDonald IV. His 40 times came in at 4.62 to 4.65 seconds. McDonald ran the 40 wearing a short sleeve hoody. NFL personnel people joked he would’ve run under 4.60 seconds without the extra draft.

His three-cone times were as fast as 6.60 seconds, and his short shuttle was 4.21 seconds. He looked terrific in drills, and there were many compliments about McDonald’s agility and ability to bend. The only criticism I heard was McDonald looked off balance because he’s “Too fast for his body.”

He participated in both defensive line and linebacker drills. Teams project McDonald as a one-gap defensive end in a 4-3 alignment or a 3-4 outside linebacker.

McDonald had dinner with the Steelers brass on Monday night. He also met with the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, and Jacksonville Jaguars. McDonald has 16 requests for official visits in the lead-up to the draft but will not be able to accommodate all of them.

A little extra meat on his bones and I could see a 3 down player. His technique is on point.

We have a lot of guys at edge look for the Jets to play one of them full time at LB. I said this last year about JJ  who I thought played the LB position better in college than he plays edge where he looks stiff IMHO. Of course people laughed when I said that, Just like they Laughed when I said AVT would play Tackle at some point when he was drafted and that Aaron Rodgers should be a Jet last year before the Pack made the deal with him.

It’s all about fresh players collapsing the pocket play after play. JD creating competition at Edge and we need someone to step up between JJ, Clemons, Huff and McDonald. Lawson’s last season. We are facing Qb murderers row this season.

JSN isn’t helping us this season. We need to hold Eagles, Bills, SD, Miami, KC, Dallas and Denver under 20 pts. These teams have tremendous receivers and we need to help our DB’s. Pressure off Edge & up the middle is how we do this.

If there was an OL, I would’ve went with that. But there wasn’t. I was fine with WR or Pass Rusher.

If you’re going against these top QBs in the AFC, you have a better chance with Rodgers AND a top defense and not just saying, go out score them in a shootout.
Rotating healthy pass rushers in big moments will pay dividends.

Agreed. I’d rather have a freak coming off the edge part time than an OT sitting on the bench, which I think would’ve been likely.

That's cool.....if he's actually a freak coming off the edge, and not an undersized, too slow LB learning a new position and how to stop the run and failing.

This pick will definitely be one that TBD till we see what he actually does on the field in games that count.  Presuming he does anything.

everyone on JN looks like an expert. Doesnt mean they shoulda been a GM that know more than a department of NFL scouts, talent evaluators and coaches.

JetNation knew more about Mekhi Becton than that scouting department and coaching staff knew...

Soo...

Broderick Jones only started one year in college and Id read that he would need a year to strengthen up for the pros.   He was the last of the 4 for a reason, and went after Darnell Wright who some projected end of first, beginning of second rd.  If they selected him he wasnt starting unless there was an injury, but he would have been groomed to replace Brown and/or Becton next year.

In pivoting to MaDonald, I think the Jets similarly were probably again planning for the departure of either Huff and/or Lawson next year, and hoping to use him situationally this year.   They are going to be hard up against the cap with Rodgers salary and there will be some tough personnel decisions to make.

Sometimes you have to play the hand that youre dealt.   This guy is quick and strong for his size.  He played straight up against college guards and tackles this year .

I could see him rushing from a LB position and really wreaking havoc.  His hand use and moves reminds me a little of Jason Taylor and he was pretty effective as a pass rusher.

I d guess the Jets select from the next tier of Offensive lineman today.  Either a center like Schmitz who some wanted at 15, or maybe that monster right tackle from Ohio State.

Hilarious, he makes a comment to one of the YouTube evaluators above. Nice to see a personality on some of these guys who are usually robotic/drone like.

im usually optimistic on these picks until I’m not. For now, there’s a lot of positives to be excited about.

I don’t think Broderick Jones was that good so I’m cool w all this

Jones probably wouldn’t play unless there was injury anyway.  At least this guy will be hunting on 20-30% of the snaps.
