What McDonald pick means for Jets and Lawson

I wonder if this could be foreshadowing similar picks the rest of the draft in terms of how they're viewing needs now. There aren't as many gaping holes for true starters as we've had in the past. Maybe they're more dialed into niche roles they see they need to fill to get over the top. Something to consider as they start to come in.

This is good logic. Opened my eyes a bit, I can walk back my bad take in the pick strategy.

The Eagles had the most sacks last season I believe........and they still determined coming into the draft that they needed more pass rush. Jets aren't as prolific as PHI, so the argument is sound that they need more guys to hit QBs........look at the gauntlet of QBs they face this year. Allen (twice), Mahomes, Herbert, Hurts, Dak, etc. Guys get hurt and worn down.......need depth at this crucial position for Jets.

This dude is really long.  He may weigh sub-240, but his arms are 2 and 5/8 longer than Skoronski.  I think that contributes to the strip sacks.  He gets his hands in there even when being blocked around the pocket.  I know people looked at Johnson as a pass rusher.  I never really did.  I think he is more of an edge setting every down guy.  McDonald seems like an actual pass rusher.

The Eagles had the #3/#3 overall Offense last year.

The Jets were #29/#25.

Now, if you think Rodgers + Lazard instead of Wilson + Moore is more than enough to make up that gap, then sure, your logic is somewhat sound.

Speaking of guys who get hurt, how has the health of our O-line and WR's been in recent years? We're good if we lose one of two of each, like we seem to every year of late, right?

Rodgers/GW/Lazard/Hardman/Davis/Mims/Conklin/Ruckert and a healthy OL with Breece/Carter/Draft Pick will be able to supply a more reasonable Top 15 offense OA… maybe even top 10.

Shutting down opposing offenses should greatly help the offensive production

I really want to see us trade for a big time WR to add to the offense. Obviously Rodgers alone is a huge bump to the offense but if you look at the top offenses a lot of them have a much more impressive trio of receiving options than we do.

DeAndre Hopkins please.

We can talk ourselves blue in the face here ( why not, lol) but let’s be honest. We’re all a little concerned with the value/pick here.

Best case scenario the kid makes a few splash plays the first week or two, then he’s golden. If he gets off slow, this place will be all over the pick. Does any of it really matter short term? No, but this place can be what’s a good word… demanding?

He’s a Jet now, so might as well get behind him and hope for things to work out well.

15th won't win a Super Bowl.

He is.

And Lazard is likely a good add, mostly for his blocking.  His incremental receiving improvement over Moore is, IMO, somewhat negligible.  Moore has done less but has and had a higher upside if used right.

Beyond that, our entire O seems to rest on "we're getting everyone from last year back from injury, surely they'll be better players and healthier this year, right?"

Maybe, but it feels a bit overly optimistic to me.  I do not want to waste even a single day of having Rodgers as our QB.

I think you make a good point.....now that major holes are filled. Seems like now (and going forward) we'll see picks that shape the team into the kind of team they want....for example Saleh loves a good D based on a strong D-line. Hence, edge rusher McDonald (versus a Safety or TE kind of pick). In fact, we could still see a young D-Tackle...massive dude who plugs up the running lanes kind of late-round draft pick.

We'll see!!!

Our O is lacking a big possession receiver (unless conklin or Ruckert can become that) and a mini-me slot guy (I know we just signed that speedster, but he's never been dominant). I'm surprised we traded Moore AND let that tiny short blond haired midget kid go to Miami. That tiny short blond haired midget kid would do really good with Rodgers.

Do that for next year when Huff and Lawson mosey on outta here! 'Ol McDonald had a farm or Michael Clemons could be our starting RDE going forward. Also, Marquiss Spencer and/or Anae could get cut or sent to the P-squad.

I really like the future of our d-line.

?? Lazard is 6'5" 227lbs and Davis is 6'3" 209lbs. Why don't they qualify?
