Jarrick Bernard-Converse, CB (No. 204)

No. 204 (via Raiders): Jarrick Bernard-Converse, CB, LSU

How he fits: Zack Rosenblatt’s analysis

The Jets don’t have a major need at cornerback but added Bernard-Converse anyway. He’s an extremely athletic defensive back (4.39 40-yard dash, 42-inch vertical, 6.94-second three-cone drill) who has experience at both cornerback and safety. He played safety at Oklahoma State before transferring to LSU, so it’s possible the Jets plan on moving him to safety — where they do have a need for some depth.

Dane Brugler’s analysis

A three-star recruit, Bernard-Converse signed with Oklahoma State and became an immediate starter at safety. He moved to cornerback for the 2020 and ’21 seasons in Stillwater before returning to his home state for his final season and transferring to LSU. Bernard-Converse offers a wealth of experience with more than 3,500 defensive snaps (64 games) and time at outside corner, nickel and safety. He drapes himself all over receivers in press but finds himself off balance trying to stay connected. He is more comfortable from off coverage, where he can read, drive and close space.

"Don't have a major need but added ____ anyway". The 2023 draft theme song. Sure glad we don't have any positions that are a major need.

If converted to Safety as expected it is a major need; especially a coverage safety were he can sit back, read and attack as he likes to do.

This in a plus athlete, plus experience at both cornerback and safety. Reminds of Tony Adams who we know they really liked. They have a type at linebacker - former safeties. Why not at safety - athletic CB/S hybrids?

The new front runner for the Jets starting FS spot.

This is what it reads like.

This guy is going to make the team and likely turn out to be a great pick.

Hope so. Seems every year it's an automatic to devote one later-round pick to a DB and every year despite the initial "hey we might've gotten a real steal here" it's never a starter. Or anyway, never more than a temporary starter until such time as the team acquires a requisite upgrade or three.

So hopefully you're right. It'd be a nice, welcome change ;)

You can add Safety/LB convert to that list. Sherwood/Nas experiment has been a fart in the wind!

We'll see how he is on the field, but I guess this is never a bad sign:

Looks a lot more like a profile for a safety than a CB with those agility scores.

Why?

Well for Hardee…..keeping a ST only player is a luxury that forces them to cut another player and or develop another player.

for Davis…he is not much diff than Hardee as he rarely see field on defense unless injury…he is also a candidate for comp pick if he stays on team this year and gets a 2nd contract from some other team in 2024…is my understanding …the level of pick is determined by his contract amount.  With all that said, what’s his value to 2023?

maybe turns out Davis/Hardee are better than the possible new alternatives in draft pick or the 2 UDFA …we shall see
