DL Rotation & Snap Counts

Recommended Posts

I think a lot of Jet fans are underestimating Jefferson.

I believe he will start (although that doesn't mean a lot give the constant rotation) next to Q. HE is the guy filling the void created by the departure of Rankins. And he is a perfect fit.

Sure, we will see JFM move inside at times. But I don't believe it will be nearly as frequently as people think. It will be with less regularity than some of the other guys are substituted to stay fresh, IMO. Situationally.

I would hope there are less total snaps for the defense, simply because the offense gets more first downs and controls the clock a bit more.

The Jets were #26 in first downs last year, averaging 17.3 per game, with only 13.7 the last 3 games of the season.

If they improve to #12 (very realistic) that is 20.5 per game, over 3 more per game, which would result in about 8-10 more plays by the offense per game, and ideally, about 10 less plays per game for the defense.

Agree on underestimating him. He’s played at least 500 snaps 5 years in a row.

I definitely agree with you. I did not factor that in only because it would have  the same net effect on everyone.

Looks like we woke up with the same thought today.

With the addition of McDonald early I wanted to see how many snaps were actually available.

The departures are in red and the additions are in green.

Q. Jefferson has a solid track record of playing so I gave him the average snaps of departing Rankins and Shepherd.

JFM will probably take many snaps at DT this year filling the rest of the snaps voided by the departing DTs.

I kept all returning players at the same snaps per game. Except for JJII, Huff and Clemons. Each got increases in playing time.

The balance was credited to Will McDonald IV.

The total defensive snaps will change this year but it will give you an idea of just how many snaps are available.

The three guys who played the highest percentage of snaps (QW, Lawson, JFM) are all still here.  Question for anyone who has the info - Can we see the % of snaps JFM played at DT vs DE over the past few years?

One of the theories I've been subscribing to a bit is that JFM will play the majority of his snaps at DT this year with the addition of McDonald.

QW, JFM, Soloman Thomas, Quinton Jefferson seem like the DT rotation with Lawson, JJ, McDonald, Huff and Clemons in the DE rotation.  Who knows?

EDIT:  In terms of size I just checked NFL.com.  Quinton Jefferson is listed 291 lbs.  JFM... 288.

We both woke up thinking my 2 year old was up all night, so there is no chance of me having sex today?

Odd, but cool.

Supposedly JFMs snap were allocated with 29% inside and 71% outside in 2022. Not sure of the source but was a compelling article.

No worries… It will all work out wonderfully!

Why wouldn’t it?
We have a top defense, led by its DL.  The DL rotation, which keeps everyone fresh is now getting a EDGE that can add additional pressure.

Somehow this is worrisome

You misread my intentions there. I was being positive, my friend.

Interesting idea about looking at snap counts but they presuppose that the player is a specialist and only good in certain situations. My guess is that even though saleh wants to keep his bigs fresh he’s also going to play the hot hand. So if Macdonald or Johnson or Lawson is in a zone they’re going to remain in the game.

That’s cool because I should have been clearer, I was aiming more towards those who have been whining since early last season about the dreaded rotation.

The Jets were considered small on the interior line.  They got pushed around pretty good against big offensive lines.   No knock on Jefferson or JFM, but we need a big monster run stuffer.

The fact that we play 2 linebacker sets 2/3 of the time and have a safety (Whitehead) and a nickel back (Carter) who are weak tacklers, means the line has to really do it's share against the run.  Quinnen is a pass rushing DT, as is  Jefferson and JFM on the inside.

Adding Clark at safety will help, but they will run on us unless we get a 320+ pound run stuffer, and quick.
