Nania: Should NY Jets try a Love-style extension with Mekhi Becton?

No.

Becton is in "prove it" mode, rightfully so.

If he plays like a stud, he'll get franchised (huge bank) or a new deal (also likely huge bank).

If not, or if he gets hurt a third year in a row, he's likely gone from the Jets.

I have to agree. It would most likely be a high risk-low reward type of situation due to his injury-riddled career.

This.

I'd rather risk a downside of extending him after the season even at $16-18MM/year - I can't see anyone outbidding the Orlando Brown UFA contract for Becton, just because he stayed on the field for 1 season of the last 3. That risk that this 4th season ends in a majority-season on IR like the prior two at a downside sinking another $13MM next year guaranteed to him? Are we even making a move to improve his spot if he's guaranteed $13MM next year? Not outside the draft, we're not.

So this idea is a "nope" for me. Or anyway, at least at a minimum let's see him performing for a little bit this summer or even into September ffs.

Love doesn't have his injury and neck-up history. Worth the gamble for them I guess; also he's a QB and while very high it's not outrageous for a stopgap as they draft a QB next year again. Whereas if Becton is anything other than top-5 elite for 15+ games this season, the easy decision is to not guarantee him $13MM for 2024.

I think the team should move him back to LT, his natural position. I think that could help him stay healthy if he doesn't have to worry about changing positions.

Also I would like the team try some NBA-style load management with him. Plan on having him play say, 12 regular season games and ideally have him healthy for the final few regular season games and a playoff run.

I would say no because I want to see if his body holds up after going through consecutive surgeries where he may not have initially taken rehab seriously. Honestly if he plays well he still may be gone

No shot. With the patience the Jets have shown with him, if he shows he can change a lightbulb he’ll be back.?

Nah. The packers were trying to make love feel, well, loved, without actually committing lol.

Becton needs to know that this is his last chance, he’s got to prove it

I don’t know if this is bectons last chance. It’s his first opportunity to land some big bucks if he plays well and it’s probably his last chance to be a future ny jet. A team will take a chance on a guy that big. It’s all a matter of the contract potential he gets.
