Connor Hughes: How The Jets Landed Aaron Rodgers

Recommended Posts

I guess pretty much as everyone expected especially about Carr.  One thing I didn’t see was any mention of milfy. The article said saleh, Douglas, hymie, woody, chris all met to determine what went wrong. Since Zach failed so badly was milfy even included in the discussion?  Milfy was launched very soon after seasons end with the oline coach and Austin.  Coincidence? I think not.  This also explains why the jets got a qb who would most likely be playing for two more seasons. Like it or not the jets are planning on Zach being qb when Rodgers hangs ‘em up.

Hughes can sorta be like that your friend who you don’t want to ask a question to even if you have to because he talks too much lol.

I don’t dislike him but don’t think he’s self aware of how he can be. His writing is generally okay and I’m no editor but this one really had some confusing transitions and flow. Breers story was def the more intriguing

When rodgers hangs em up we will draft a qb or sign another vet off the street. ZW has no future on the jets

like it or not, zach is not hackenberg.  he actually is pretty talented as a qb.  i can't believe people don't realize he also won 5 games last season.  that's more than mfw or flacco.  the jets believe there is something there and are willing to find out.  oh, imo, they might decide after this season that they need to move on but until they get to that point, zach will take over from rodgers.

This makes it sound like the "major sticking point" of the trade was play time percentage that would determine the 2024 pick being a first or second. If we are to believe this article, the Jets were at 85% of snaps, the Packers at 50% of snaps. They settled at 65% (middle).

I would hope the talks were more complex than that.

They have repeatedly said that Zach has a future here.  It’s up to him to win over his teammates and get better and improve, but he’s going to get every chance to do it.

Agree.  I  expected there to be a whole complicated negotiation over who pays what regarding that contract but it doesn't sound like it was a focal point of the discussions at all.

Count me into the ones who believe they want Zach to be the starter after Rodgers retires.

may bring in a vet or someone for competition, but it’ll be zachs job to lose

LMAO
#2 overall pick could have been converted into 3 1sts and multiple 2nds.
Instead the GM was stupid and went all on a kid who turned out to be 39th out of 32 starting NFL QBs
Don't know why I'm responding to a robot ... But Zach's story is far from over.

There is a personal dislike for him that disguised as deeply analytic dismay.

I believe that Rodgers was their top choice and why they were willing to pass on carr was because Rodgers was the best short term option and gives us the most long term options. Signing carr, at best would have got us a mediocre qb for the next 5-6 years. Rodgers should be the better qb for the next 2 years, and if he retires, it gives this team the chance to either go back to Zach (doubtful, he sucks), or to go and draft another prospect, and try again.  this time though, having a stacked team around the qb that can prop him up while he learns. This will also allow this team to remain competitive and sign key guys because the next qb would be on a cheap, rookie deal. I think that’s why Tannenhill was mentioned in this article as well, he’d have provided the same kind of options. I don’t believe this is a pure sell out at all costs to win like we saw the rams do, I think there is a long term plan to remain competitive in place as well. A good plan is in place, hopefully they can execute it.

This is far from the truth.

What would it have cost to get Rodgers after his back to back MVPs?

The Jets saw a unique opportunity to buy a franchise QB after a down year .. during a breaking point in the relationship .. at a time they were at the top of attractive win now destinations.

Why can’t you give JD credit for that … now that you see a highly motivated & refreshingly happy to be here QB who is building relationships, at the facility, and has stated he is not a 1 & Done (which his initially reworked contract already suggests)?

I concede we didn’t just steal him and that your & others’ concerns on length of contract and motivation were understandable concerns.

Most debates between reasonable people should come with acknowledgements on both sides ..

I’ve been both critical and supportive of JD.   I can go either way with a level of independent thinking.

So why can’t you give him some credit for pivoting off his failure called Zach?  Is it because it’s not what you would have done .. or because you think Zach is still the guy despite his holy sh*te regression last year .. or because you are unhappy with him selecting Zach in the 1st place.  That my friend is short sighted thinking … not getting a QB who might only be here a couple years.

no problem with fans disliking a player for whatever reason just as long as his team mates perform.  i think many fans think he's a punk but i don't recall any players saying this is true.  heck sanchez did some of the same things zach has done off the field but never seemed to garner the same ire.

I think I have been reasonable here.

Below are two points - both can be accurate at once....

1) The value for Rodgers was reasonable.  Probably high, but in a vacuum a reasonable price for a player with his accomplishments and potential.

2) Understanding GB's situation and the fact that the Jets were the only interested team AND the only team Rodgers was willing to play for and that GB HAD to get rid of him - the Jets played this awfully.

You won't find any place where I said Zach should be starting (I don't even think he should be on the team) and you won't find a place where I said I was unhappy about having Rodgers.  In fact, it's been the contrary.  Happy he's here - I've said it many times.  I have some legitimate concerns for sure.  But so should all of you.

You all just want to attack without actually reading what I'm saying.

Wilson didn’t “win” 5 games.  The Jets did and he happened to be the QB.  That’s what he brought to the table.  He also almost single-handed lost both Pats games.  So this narrative needs to die a swift death.

I wouldn’t go that far. They drafted him, so what’s done is done on that front, but I don’t see them going with him a second time just to give it a shot. Every GM drafts busts, sure, but once you’re a victim, twice you’re a fool.

As it is he’s going to have to give them a reason to exercise his 5th year option after this season. He has to re-win over his coaches and get the locker room behind him. Both things, during or by the end of the 2023 season; and that’s just to even consider adding an expensive 5th season.

What’ll further clarify - or further muddy - this is if Rodgers misses a few games in the late fall or early winter & how much better (or no-better) he looks. If he looks really good then Wilson can be confident at least one other team will have noticed

Basically they want to go from Rodgers to Wilson IF the timing works out AND IF he’s given them serious reasons to reinvest in him and stick their necks out for him a second time. AND if he’s given them such reasons then those feelings still might not even be mutual. Even if all that happens, should Rodgers have 2-3 great seasons and then retire, add a further IF Wilson really wants to have a lights-out Aaron Rodgers as his measuring stick instead of a clean slate elsewhere.

Right now I think it’s less than 50-50 he’s the starting QB after Rodgers retires, but at this early juncture it’s just a guess. Just seems like too many ifs and (as things stand now) the timing doesn’t look particularly ideal either.

I’m not attacking .. just getting to the most basic questions and potential noise surrounding your continued skepticism about the deal ..

Do I think the Jets could have held out for a better deal?  Yes I do ..  but they chose to close the deal right before the draft instead of taking on potentially more risk after the draft.

But they still valued him at much more than that, not unlike seeing a great deal on a car and leaving with the car even though you might have been able to hold out for a little less.

Bigger picture question for you and why I believe they still bought low considering they (not irrationally) believe his down year was due to his broken throwing thumb and inexperienced / meh receiving core::

- What would the Jets have needed to pay for him a year earlier after back to back MVPs?

Overall I’m happy with the deal. JD had no choice but to close, Green Bay knew it, and yeah they pushed hard. With a longer wait who would’ve blinked first? I guess we will never know but fact is this was a must-have for the Jets and they went out and got him.

Personally, I don’t think time would’ve made much difference. The only way Jets could have put a little scare into GB was to sign a marginal placeholder starter such as Minshew or Teddy B and then it would be up to JD to sell that the Jets were willing to roll with the guy if GB didn’t ease up on the demands. But JD didn’t do that so it is what it is.

It’s definitely just a guess. The ideal scenario is that Zach develops and turns into a fqb.

it seems like Rodgers actually wants to be a good mentor to him. Zach really needs that imo. He was raw coming out and had no guidance. Mlf was brand new at calling plays and never developed a qb before. Calibrease is a complete unknown. That was about it. Kid needed to sit for a year and learn/grow.

I hope it works out for him. He has all the talent in the world, just need to get his head right
