What Vet QB do we sign as Camp Cap Casualties happen

Recommended Posts

We need a Vet backup since all in for 2023 we would NEVER risk a injury to Aaron and having Zach have to come in as we learned last year Bart Starrs ghost would have gotten us playoffs.

So EVERY year a fairly solid handful of Vet QBs get cut cause they lose thier jobs and younger guys are a tad less or equal in play but make a ton less money. Also this is usually reserved for teams that dont expect to be playoff contenders of full blown rebuilds who drafted high round QBs.

Who are your guesses at who may be Vet QB Cap Cuts who could get Jets thru a period of games if God forbid Aaron dinged? Usually teams who drafted 1st Rd QBs let go of high paid Vet QBs cause they are in full rebuild.

With what money?

JD has to pull 40 million out of his ass for #8 that he doesn’t have

Rodgers' new deal is supposedly going to free up tens of millions in cap space.

He’s on the books for 1.5 million this year, 100 million next year.  Not sure how you turn that into tens of millions this year.

Didn't Connor Hughes send a tweet saying it was going to be an amazing deal that would free up $40 million or something along those lines?  May have even been Rap Sheet.  Can't fully recall.

Also feel like neither Teddy B or Nick Foles would command a great deal.  I'm sure they could free up a couple million if they wanted to.

You clearly do not understand their intentions with Zach

All I remember is vague comments that jets fans would love the contract, I suspect that was a misunderstanding that the packers tweek was what he would play under this year. I’m certainly no cap expert.

From otc

Contract Notes

Aaron Rodgers signed a three year, $150 million contract with the Packers on March 14, 2022. Rodgers received $101.4 million in full guarantees and $150.66 million in injury guarantees. Rodgers received a $40.8 million signing bonus as part of the contract. The Packers can pick up a guaranteed option in 2023 worth $58.3 million. If Rodgers is on the roster on the 5th day of the 2024 waiver period his salary for the year and a $47 million option bonus will be fully guaranteed. The team has two dummy years on the contract for salary cap purposes. Technically they are not void years but they are not seasons that Rodgers would be asked to honor if he were on the roster.

Rodgers was traded to the Jets on April 26, 2023. Prior to the trade the Packers reworked the contract to carry a $1.165 million salary cap charge for 2023. That is just a placeholder to facilitate the trade and the Jets and Rodgers will work out a new contract in the days following the trade.

Found the story I was thinking of.  And yeah, Connor said fans would love the contract but Rap Sheet said the deal would free up over $40 million.

Looks like that was just money they wouldn't have to play him this season after coming over from the Packers.  It was a couple weeks ago so I recalled it as him saying it would be space freed up after he signed his new deal.

I hope you’re right. The jets could do any number of things with that much flexibility. Maybe that and his wife being super pregnant is why there is no news on Q. Get Rodgers done, get space, get Q done.

$1.5 million right now.  He's going to see what the NYJ need to put a team around him and the NYJ will re-do his contract  salary this year to what is remaining.  That'll come off the $100 million due next yr.

Imagine a great start then old man arron going down week 7 and zach comes in and plays like a nice solid qb

Imagine all going well until Rodgers rolls an ankle in the first half of round 1 of the playoffs and you have to turn to Zach to win the game for you or your season is over.

Yeah this is the packers contract. The jets are only 7 million under the cap right now. I’m not sure he’s taking less value overall to accommodate other players.

Zach Wilson will be the #2 QB this year. We aren't adding a QB.

This!!!  People better realize with Rodgers here that the organization is all in on developing Wilson

Been thinking about this a fair bit since we discussed it.  Not sure if there's a limit on how many voidable years a team can use to spread out a cap  hit but it looks as if they're going to have to spread out the entire $107 million whereas I initially interpreted it as the initial chunk already being taken care of.

Can they do a 5-year deal with the last 3 being voidable and just take on the $21 million per year dead cap hit for 3 years after Rodgers leaves?  Not sure how else they make it work.

Zach is the back up vet. He’s won more games than mfw and nearly as many as darnold in three seasons as a jet.  And don’t discount a couple of game winning drives. They didn’t have enough red zone success because milfy didn’t know how to call plays when they count or coach up players.

Even if you think Zach is still the future, his most ardent supporters should not want him to see the field this year.

Don't disagree with that. My point was that literally everything suggests Zach will be QB2 this year.

Which makes no sense to me.  I get that they are already paying Rodgers and Wilson a lot of money but there are better options than Tim Boyle (that are still very cheap) as a preventative measure to keep Wilson from seeing the field.

Well you think Zach sucks but the Jets do not and still see his potential.

That's because the Rappaport piece was before Rodgers redid his deal for the trade.  As it currently sits, the deal is going to be redone again back in the other direction to pay Rodgers more this year.

Boyle was in Hackett's offense for a couple of years and presumably does not anger Rodgers.  Win-win.  Signing a cut-down day QB is generally a mistake since they have to learn the O on the fly and that sh*t should be over and done.  You end up with one of those BS streetball offenses like the Mayfield Rams or the Favre Jets

The Jets are only going to have 2 QBs this season... Aaron and Zach and Strevler or Boyle on the PS. That's it... I know for the Zach haters this is unacceptable, but Zach still has a lot of talent and has a chance to be fixed with less pressure sitting behind a HOF QB. They are not going to spend any more money on a veteran QB and they are not carrying 3 QBs into the season.
