Everyone loves a good underdog story, and there may be one brewing at 1 Jets Drive as Izaiah Gathings, a Jets tryout player out of Middle Tennessee State has landed a contract with Gang Green.

We've signed TE Izaiah Gathings.

A 6′ 4” receiver at MTSU, Gathings is listed as a tight end by the Jets whose tight end room adds yet another body.

Having used a draft pick on Zach Kuntz to join second-year man Jeremy Rucker in the tight end room along with starters Tyler Conklin and CJ Uzomah, the Jets now have a blend of established vets and developmental youngsters.

Over his past two collegiate seasons, Gathings racked up 861 yards and 3 touchdowns on 84 receptions.

While Gathings was not an NFL combine participant, he did work out at his pro day with the following results according to draftscout.com.

Ht: 6 ‘3”
Wt: 233
40: 4.67
20 yd split: 2.81
10 yd split: 1.69
225 reps: 19
Vert: 36”
Broad: 10’ 1”
20yd shuttle: 4.26
3-Cone: 7.11

Prior to transferring to MTSU, Gathings spent time at Gardner-Webb where he was the team’s leading receiver in 2019 and 2020.

He is obviously an unlikely guy to have any impact, but there is already a thread discussing him.  Small school guy transitioning from WR to TE.  Looks like he put on some weight before the pro day and still put up decent numbers.  Seems strange.  His 3 cone seems bad to me, but still would have been 4th at the combine.  I did like that he seemed to have long arms, big hands, and a few of the profiles mentioned a bully mentality and muscling DBs.  People hate on guys like this, but he has some potential and his route to he active roster will be through special teams, so he may be competing with the LBs and safeties as much as Ruckert, Kuntz. Yeboah and Jenkins.

Interesting that the Jets continue to sign additional tight ends.  I did not consider this area a need.  Starting with Conklin, Uzamah, Ruckert and Yeboah, I would have thought they were fine.  Adding a Kuntz was a shot at a unicorn talent.  Never hurts to take a look.

I wish they were as aggressive looking at LB's and free safeties.  Roster is pretty thin there, especially if Clarke is slotted to replace Kwon.  Have never been impressed with anything I've seen from Nasirildeen or Sherwood.  If Mosley or Quincy Williams gets hurt, it could undermine the enetire defense.  I understand they like Adams but that is a big stretch for a win now team.  Clark and Whitehead are both strong safeties that struggle in space.  Clark is good picking up backs or tight ends.  Not sure what Whitehead is good at.  Draft picks look like special teams and depth pieces.

That's two spots with big questions and no depth on a defense we hope will be a key for this team.

To be fair they did draft a linebacker and sign 3 more as UDFA's with along with a safety (Marquis Waters) who played a ton of LB in college.
