Jets on Black Friday (annually)

Recommended Posts

This is interesting. I had read yesterday that Cincinnati had offered up the same proposal. The league chose the Jets in part because NY is the world’s largest retail market, and I’m sure that would be a factor in deciding a permanent team.

A bigger factor might be, how does the league feel about having to schedule the Lions on Thanksgiving every year? Because like the Lions, the Jets aren’t always a premier game.

Woody pushed hard for the Jets to be the permanent host of the prime time Thanksgiving game when it was originally introduced a decade ago.

Him wanting a similar set up for Black Friday is not a surprise.

Asking because I don't know.  Other than maintaining a tradition that was started before any of us were born,  is there any kind of contractual obligation for the NFL to continue scheduling a Thanksgiving game for the Lions (or even the Cowboys for that matter)?

I would love this. What a great way to start off the weekend.

Thanksgiving and the games on Thursday, Jets game Friday and then you can relax and watch the rest on Sunday from the comfort of your own home and not worry about the holiday traffic getting home.

Although there might be a lot of black friday shopping traffic too, but at least most people are off the next day.

I love the idea of it but I'm kind of skeptical the NFL will go with it.

Why award a premier honor to a team that is usually bad? Lions are tradition, but I'm sure NFL wishes they could mix it up and have premier matchups all three games on Thanksgiving.

Because good or bad the Jets are more entertaining than the Lions.

The last time we played on Thanskgiving the Jets provided the NFL world with the buttfumble.

Eh, I dunno. There are years and years of evidence from 2016-2021 that the Jets are not in fact always "entertaining." I know, I made myself watch.

Still more entertaining than the Lions!  People love seeing us lose, particularly in primetime.  And in tank years, I enjoy watching us lose too!

As for the Lions, watching them lose is like (to borrow a turn of phrase from @T0mShane) seeing a cat with leukemia.

Don't worry, if it turns out to be a good thing, we'll end up blowing it.  The NFL draft felt like it was practically was a Jets' home game and we lost that.
