Jets have sixth-most cap space heading into summer

The Jets spent a good portion of the spring playing some salary-cap gymnastics. There were three reasons for this: the Jets needed the space in general, they need to eventually extend Quinnen Williams (which is still yet to happen) and they had to fit Aaron Rodgers into the mix when they traded for him.Players such as Jordan Whitehead and Carl Lawson, to name a few, saw their contracts get reworked to give New York some breathing room. They also currently have all of Rodgers’ option bonus money pushed into 2024.

For now, that has helped the Jets set themselves up among the top ten teams in terms of salary cap space as the NFL enters its summer vacation with OTAs and minicamps wrapping up.The Jets currently sit with the sixth-most cap space in the league with just over $22 million worth of room, based on the numbers from the NFLPA. They are one of just seven teams with at least $20 million. The Bears have the most with $31 million while the Chiefs currently have just under $400,000 in space.

Moves the Jets can still potentially do over the summer include restructuring Rodgers’ deal — Rodgers currently is counting over $107 million towards the cap in 2024 — as well as that of C.J. Mosley, who has the highest cap hit this season at $21.7 million. Then there is the aforementioned looming (hopefully) contract extension for their All-Pro defensive tackle Williams. With a little over a month before training camp, the Jets have time now to figure out their next moves to try and set themselves up for future success.

Cutting Corey Davis and restructuring CJ Mosley frees up another 20 million+. Leaving us with 40 million plus after signing rookies. Restructuring Rodgers and signing Q long term will cost at least 30 million towards 2023. Still leaves room for a RB/WR or both.

I’m sure our resident capologists can say for sure but isn’t any unused cap carried over to the next season? If so and depending on what Rodgers and qwills contacts require this should be a good thing. I seriously doubt this team can improve much by signing any additional free agents this year unless there are things going with breece halls recovery or other actions.

They could do that, yes. Whatever cap number they were going to allocated to Rodgers in '23 could instead just be carried over to '24. Then even though Rodgers carries a higher cap number next year, the cap ceiling is raised by that increased amount as well. The net gain or penalty either way is zero, whether they choose to restructure Rodgers this year or next year.

The main benefit to restructuring him this year instead of waiting until next year is how much less will accelerate as a balloon dead cap hit after he retires. They're surely going to add BS void years, so the less they shove off to those void years = the less dead cap hit they'll assume that year. It still technically doesn't matter in terms of cumulative cap hits, because those will add up to the same in the end (the $ they paid Rodgers must hit the cap; no more, no less, no matter how it's structured or when it's paid).

How have some of you not wised up to that our cap space isn't real right now. Rodgers isn't staying making less than 2mill this year (think of how stupid it is to think he'd play for under 2mill). So no we don't have "roughly" 25mill in cap space. He's just waiting to maneuver his cap hit based on the roster moves we make between now and TC.

Salary cap space for every NFL team,..

Glenn Erby - Wed, June 21, 2023

As the NFL and Philadelphia Eagles head into the dry stretch of the offseason, fans and experts now wait for training camp.Teams across the country have just wrapped up minicamp, with the Birds being the only team in the league without a mandatory session.

While coaches and players are on a mini vacation until then, it’s still a wise time to check into the salary cap situations around the league… particularly for Philadelphia after some recent moves made by the team.

Here’s a team-by-team breakdown of every NFL team’s salary cap space ahead of training camp via Over The Cap.

--- 5. New York Jets

Cap space: $23,152,295
