** - Chris Streveler will start the 3rd quarter contingent on satisfactory play of Tim Boyle against Tampa. Sort of a courtesy to Streveler to showcase him to the league. Sorry all you Streveler Fans, he is being cut this year and its doubtful he will be signed to the Practice Squad if all other QBs are healthy at the completion of the Preseason.

Look if the plan is to develop Zach under Rodgers tutelage as starter than you assume Rodgers starts every game. Wilson should be 3 quarters in the first 3 games. I am not super concerned about reps for Boyle and Streveler.

johnny there is too much injury risk. Rodgers doesn't need much in the way of reps to get up to speed and after the 2nd half starts in any of these games the opposition is pretty fielding scrubs. What is Zach going to get out of that ?

Live reps in a new offense. He needs as many as he can get

The preseason approach has changed drastically in the last decade.  I don't think Rodgers plays one down this preseason, whereas if this was 2016 he would probably play a couple of series in the first game, a half in the second game and into the 3rd quarter in the third game.  The same for many starters.

Wilson was thrown into the fire as a rookie. He barely played in preseason and got hurt last year. He badly needs the reps.

The reps given to Boyle would be better spent as a giveaway prize to a fan.

The abject fear over Rodgers (or anyone decent) playing in the preseason is amazing in this thread.

Rodgers in on a new team, with new players, in a "new" system he hasn't played in lately.  He needs reps, all-pro HOF'er or not.

If you're terrified he's gonna go down playing a single series in pre-season, and you equally worried he'll go down week 1?  Or Week 2?

Or is it just preseason where you think this risk exists?

They are having 2 or is it 3 joint practices this summer.  When you do a joint practice all week, you get plenty of reps to build chemistry.

If they do a joint practice and then put Rogers or Garrett Wilson out there in the preseason game, they should all be fired.

One can accept the risk of him getting injured in a regular season game that actually counts

One does get to accept risk or not accept risk, risk simply exists.

And getting hurt in preseason game #4 playing a single series vs. regular season game #1 is utterly and completely the same thing, results wise.  Sitting and not playing preseason won't stop a guy getting hurt, in fact probably makes an early regular season injury more likely, not less.

Players play.  They're not china dolls.  If you think they are, they shouldn't be here.

We’ve seen meaningless preseason games ruin our season before.  Chad Pennington in 2003 the most obvious example.  No one cares about preseason despite your empty “gotta be old school” rhetoric

I care about winning.  Our QB being ready from the first snap of week 1 helps winning.

You can try and shelter a soft player like Chad all you want, he'll still get hurt (how many times did he get hurt in regular season games, plenty!).  Soft players get hurt, doesn't matter if it's preseason or regular.

Sheltering Rodgers and limiting his reps will just make him less capable of winning right away, and no more or less susceptible to an injury regardless. We're talking a few series at minimum.  Are you THAT afraid Rodgers is gonna fold like a wet newspaper playing a few series?  If so, you're gonna have a very nervous regular season.

As a bonus, playing Wilson  (a soft player) alot more raises the chances Wilson (the #2) gets hurt (hurt every year so far) and need to be replaced at cost.  A lose/lose.

The disrespect to The Strev is heinous.

How so? He’ll be in for more quarters than Boyle.  At this stage the jets will looking to see if he’s worth keeping on the practice squad. I gat fans liking his moxie but the position also takes some serious arm strength.

How much does Garrett Wilson play?

He will play when Rodgers is in the game. Both players need the reps together. That's why Aaron Rodgers will play more than 2 Series this Preseason. The first series in the game against Tampa and the better part of the 1st Quarter against the Giants.

  • 2 weeks later...

Week 1:

Zac Wilson 1st half, Boyle 3rd quarter, Streveler 4th quarter

Week 2:

Boyle 1st half, Streveler 3rd quarter, Wilson 4th quarter

Week 3:

Rodgers 1st half, Wilson 3rd quarter, Boyle 4th quarter

Week 4:

Rodgers 1 series, Wilson rest of 1st quarter and 2nd quarter, Boyle, 3rd quarter, Streveler 4th quarter.

People will be aghast at giving Rodgers a half and a series but it's important he gets at least a bit of playing time.  Mitigate risk by making sure he plays only with starters and have conservative low risk play calling.

I don’t know if Wilson plays in the HOF game. My guess right now would be he doesn’t.
