Plenty of big-name free agents remain available

Recommended Posts

July 4, 2023

It's July 4. The annual celebration of American independence. With training camps opening in a few weeks, there are plenty of players who would be interested in shedding their own independence and joining a team.In recent weeks, much of the focus has fallen upon running back Dalvin Cook and receiver DeAndre Hopkins. But there are plenty of other players with instantly-recognizable names who remain available to be signed, by any team at any time.

Several quarterbacks remain unattached, including Carson Wentz, Teddy Bridgewater, and Matt Ryan, who has taken a job at CBS but who hasn't closed the door on playing. Joe Flacco is available, as are Nick Foles and Chase Daniel.Running back Ezekiel Elliott has been on the market for months, with no takers. Likewise Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt, J.D. McKissic, and Mark Ingram haven't signed. As running backs inevitably get injured, will their phones ring ?  Receivers Jarvis Landry, N'Keal Harry, Kenny Golladay, and Julio Jones are available, as are tight ends Cameron Brate, Marcedes Lewis, and Kyle Rudolph. The offensive linemen still on the market include Taylor Lewan, Chase Roullier, Justin Pugh, and George Fant.Plenty of pass rushers are out there, such as Yannick Ngakoue, Jadeveon Clowney, Robert Quinn, and Melvin Ingram.

Interior defensive linemen like Akiem Hicks, Ndamukong Suh, LInval Joseph, and Tyson Alualu are available.Linebackers Anthony Barr, Myles Jack, Kyle Van Noy, and Kwon Alexander remain unsigned.Cornerback Marcus Peters, Eli Apple, and William Jackson are available, as are safeties John Johnson, Duron Harmon, and Logan Ryan.Plenty of kickers are on the market, including Mason Crosby, Randy Bullock, Ryan Succop, Zane Gonzalez, and Brett Maher. Top free-agent punters are Matt Araiza and Andy Lee.Some players could be signed before camp opens. Some could be added once teams see what they have (or don't have), or as players get injured. Some could wait to see how the season begins to unfold. Others simply won't get a call, either because they want too much or because no one is or will be interested.

It's how the game goes. Every year, new players enter. There are only so many roster spots. And not nearly enough players choose to retire. For most, the game makes the decision for them.

If Fants knee is fully healed I would not mind resigning him as a backup at LT. Only thing I could think why he’s not signed is that the knee is worse than we know as George played very well when Becton went down

That’s why there shouldn’t too much concern about the jets not signing Kwon yet. And who knows who’s not going to compete in training camp. The jets are bring a bunch of guys in and every year there are significant changes from the tear before. Hopefully these changes are for the better.

I can see Fant returning here on a one year team friendly insurance policy.

Right now, you have Max Mitchell and our 4th round draft pick as backup tackles to Brown and Becton.  Add to that, we have Schweitzer and I think another guy we signed in free agency.  We don't have room for another backup tackle on our roster, I don't believe.  And Fant was getting around $5M per year with the Jets, and unless he wants to take a cut in pay to about $2M per year, I don't see the Jets being interested in another backup tackle.

Warren is hurt and not sure of Mitchell’s official status.  Oh yeah Brown and Becton haven’t been cleared to practice yet.

Taylor Lewan wouldn't be a bad backup being he's familiar with our OL coach. Wont cost much and wont be relied on as a backup. James and Fischer are more proven backups ads well. All depends likely on how much we trust Becton (shouldn't be much trust there) and our backups in Turner, Mitchell and Warren. OT I think we are rather good at as far as depth is concerned though.

Several good LBs we could still add. Kwon obviously... but I like guys like Myles Jack and Deion Jones out there as well. I do think we need to add a guy here.

S I'd like to add depth. I just don't think we can win a SB with the depth we have there and with Whitehead's bad play last year. Josh Johnson makes a good amount of sense for us. This after LB I have as biggest need to add a body.

And I'd still like to add a proven RB still. Doesn't have to be Cook... but I want someone. Elliott and Hunt are guys I'd like to be on our shortlist.

You dont know what he did to the Jets a few years back?

I am aware of what you’re talking about but my question is why should he “get effed” over it? For a fanbase that hates players who play hardball to maximize their earnings, Barr should be sanctified for taking less to remain with the team that drafted him.

Or that he wasn't that good.

umm because he accepted the jets offer and then told peopel he was physically sick over the thought of playing here and went back to the vikings. has nothing to do with him taking less money to stay with the vikings....it's because he sh*t on and embarrassed the jets.....so he can really get ****ed.

After he agreed to the Jets offer, shook on the deal and bailed because it was the day before the official start of FA?

F him.

I took a job once I knew was wrong — could just feel it — but I had already played my cards at my previous company and was too proud to walk it back. Barr had that courage. I respect that. Takes guts.

Was he wrong? We have been horrendous during that time period.

Yes, you’ve said that but you still haven’t answered why.

Cause we don't like him.  Some of us don't like welchers. Like McDaniel running out on Indy or Tubby bailing on the Bucs.  **** 'em all, I say.  While we are at it, **** Antoine Winfield too.  Only the father ****ed us, but screw the son too!

I hear you but if he had regrets and just felt it was wrong and changed his mind, well, it’s his life. Probably did us a favor. Doubt he would’ve been all-in had he come here because he felt he had to.

That's his problem.  I don't have to like it.

No, you don’t. I was asking why people hate him. Some evaded the question for some reason but I appreciate you answering.

Yeah, what’s someone’s word?  Not how I was raised

Wasting a whole lot of peoples time.  He didn’t understand that signing on with another team would mean he would have to leave Minny?  No way.  All those months leading up to his FA he never thought about it?

Word not worth much when you’re in a position you detest and it depresses you and makes you feel like less of a person which bleeds into your personal life. Been there. Your first duty is to yourself and your family.  He got cold feet and realized this wasn’t the place for him. Wish I had listened to my gut.

How could he predict it?  He chickened out and went back on his word.  Don’t think it’s a crime but again he knew he was leaving before the end of the prior seasons end.  What was he going to do if he was allowed to sign on that day?  He would have signed then what?

That’s all.  Gets him a F’ that’s all
