PFF announced the best position groups in the AFC

Recommended Posts

Not that pff has a ton of credibility it would be interesting to see how each portion of the defense stacks up against other teams as a measure of how good it is or can be. I think one issue is that saleh plays that nine wide where other teams are four- three or three- four.  Maybe that’s a little nit picky since no team plays strictly one way.  I also believe in the Al Davis rule where you build defenses from the corners in, instead of the dline out.  Dline are important but maybe the corners are where you use the high draft pick values.

Is Miami's defensive line really that good? Who are their top guys besides Christian Wilkins?

3-4 DL guys always grade out too high on PFF, which clouds the picture.

Their other starters are Raekwon Davis (NT) and Zach Sieler.

I’d take our DL in a heartbeat over Miami’s.

PFF is a joke on this.  They rated 2 of their 3 starting 3-4 DL (Davis and Ogbah) in the mid 40s to low 50s last year.  That’s below starting quality per their grading system.

OK, they have Christian Wilkins in the mid 80s.  I’ve always had the impression he was a very good player.  No argument there.

And if they are including Bradley Chubb in the equation, I think he’s overrated because of his huge swings in consistency.  Even so, he graded in the same range as Carl Lawson and only had 1 more sack.

Complete joke.  PFF had Quinnen and Huff both rated in the low 90s last year, JFM not too far behind Wilkins, Clemons just shy of 80 as an elite run stopper, JJ in the low 70s and one of their better Edge setters.

To be fair on the flip side, our CBs might be at the top but too many question marks about our safeties to put our secondary at the top.

My own rankings would have the Jets DL and CBs near the very top of the AFC, with the DL winning any tie breakers based on quality of depth.

Safeties and LBs would likely be near the bottom unless Tony Adams and Jamie Sherwood are big hits.  If you have to have weaknesses, those would be the defensive positions to have them at.

EDIT: I guess I forgot they traded for Bradley Chubb. I'm still kinda shocked that's the best group in the AFC. Doesn't scare me that much on paper.

Miami has a tough defense all around. So no knock on them. But I agree, their DL doesnt seem like it should be tops in the league. I’ll take the Eagles DL all day. The Commanders might be better as well.

They're going to get top 5 QB this year....

Along with what seems to be a great OL and running game.  They will be very tough to beat.

The same QB who sucked, absolutely sucked but somehow you have him returning to form with Rodgers going into a spiral.

The safeties are completely unspectacular, which only speakers further to how great their CBs are to be considered the top secondary.  That's not unjustified either though, as I cannot imagine there's a single safety in the league that any of us would trade either Sauce or Reed for.

The DL has potential but needs to have some of the guys not named Quinnen start to have a greater (and more consistent) return on the field.  The most likely answer would be to slide JFM inside and start having some of the slew of hyped-up DEs brought in over the past few years show it on the field, but we'll see.

The LBs are easily the team's worst unit now that they got a QB, so we mostly just have to hope that some of the unseen depth the team supposedly likes what they've seen in practice can start to show something.  Mosley is arguably the league's most overpaid player and the Quincy contract honestly seemed more like an unsuccessful negotiation tactic as much as anything.  However, if the DL can play up to their potential, that's also probably the position this defense can most get away with as the least impressive, although need to not be wasting so much money there in that case.

Philly had a ridiculous 70 sacks last year so id still rate them 1st overall DL. But when it comes to us and Miami?! I’m taking our DL all day. We are just so loaded and so much depth it will be tough to slow down this onslaught

EDGE: Lawson, McDonald, JFM, Huff, JJ, Clemons

IDL: Q, Al Woods , Solomn Thomas,
