Former Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini Says Team Should Pursue big Name Free Agents

Recommended Posts

Written by Glenn NaughtonEric-Mangini.jpg

Former Jets head coach Eric Mangini has chimed in on the swirling rumors regarding free agents Dalvin Cook and DeAndre Hopkins.  According to Mangini, with such a small window having been opened up to win a Super Bowl, the Jets should come calling.

Mangini, according to The 33rd team, said he believes the Jets “Should go all in and sign a guy like DeAndre Hopkins or Dalvin Cook.  At least give yourself the best opportunity to go try to win a Super Bowl”.

In the case of Hopkins it appears to be a moot point as the Jets have shown no interest in the dynamic receiver.  In regards to Cook however, the Jets are viewed by some as the odds on favorite to bring the running back on board.

Maneuvering Aaron Rodgers' 2024 cap hit could be a burden for the #Jets, but Eric Mangini thinks the team should go all in on 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 season 🤔

Bookies.com lists the Jets as the favorite to sign cook at 22% with the Dolphins close behind at 21%.  Cook has made it clear that the Dolphins are his first choice, saying Miami would be the “perfect fit”, but if the money isn’t right, it’s fair to assume he’ll look elsewhere.

He's right.

So far JD has added literally nothing to the offense since acquiring Rodgers.

That's not good. And if it doesnt change, Jets are going nowhere with their current roster.

It’s sucks. Playing 4 vs 11 on offense is going to be brutal.

I think you mean big name expensive players.  Welcome to the world of the superstar QB and his contract.

Here’s a position rundown on offense acquired this offseason.

QB Rodgers

QB Boyle ( he sucks I’ll give you that lol)

WR Lazard

WR Hardman

RB Izzy

OT Turner

OT Warren

C Tippmann

C Schweitzer

C Colon

TE Kuntz-PS bound

OBJ is averaging 1 catch a game over the past four seasons accounting for games missed due to injury

Cook is high on the list of unemployed RBs that have a high rate of drops/fumbles/ allowed pressures    eww

DHop wants OBJ money and teams feel when things don’t go his way he becomes a distraction.

otherwise, solid post.

You do realize you just listed a bunch of JAG players and a rookie center, right?

.................. And its a bunch of JAGs and a rookie center. Hi.

Like I said, nothing added to the offense before/after Rodgers was acquired.

This team needs more PLAYMAKERS on offense and possibly another top flight Olineman.

Fix it then. Show us your 54 man roster but no magic GM nonsense like you would get tough with the packers and get Rodgers for a 4th and OBJ for $9 million.

you’re hung up on added. Makes no sense. Lazard in the big slot with Wilson, Davis and Hall will eat.

Wilson , Davis, Lazard, Hardman and Cobb is a nice group. You have X, Z, slot covered.

Hall Carter and Izzy are question marks  but I’m not worried about them, you can bring in fresh legs at anytime in the backfield

Try to imagine a QB that can play chess with the defense, make the correct line calls, manipulate the safeties, buy time in the pocket, pick the right guy and deliver the ball on time and accurately. He makes everyone around him better. Your argument is about name players.

Rodgers is a name, right ?

This is how Tannenbaum built teams, basically because he had no confidence in his ability to draft. Over one four year period, he failed to draft seven players once, including two drafts of four players and one of three. Those teams proved to be top heavy, with no depth, and struggled to get by with any sort of injury adversity.

Big name players generally means overpriced players. These guys are all on the market right now for the same reason: they think they’re worth more than they actually are.

Yeah, my post was really a commentary on your use of the word, “literally”.

You can judge the quality of players he’s added all you want but the truth is JD added 2 QBs, 3 WRs, 5 OL, a RB, and a TE.  To say he’s “literally” added nothing to the offense is just wrong. He has literally added pieces to every position group this off-season.

Besides Rodgers, Lazard and Hardman though… everyone else is a backup. And even then Hardman will be battling for touches with Lazard and Davis. And he has injury issues as well. So really we’ve brought in Rodgers and Lazard that will be regulars for us.

Great moves. Don’t get me wrong. But for me that’s still just “kind of” going all in in this likely 2 year window.

New Girl Ugh GIF

This all in thing needs to die lol.  Yeah but Wilson and Hall are here already and they actually count.

the best offenses recently have an almost unstoppable combination like Mahomes/ kelce.

Rodgers /Wilson could be that. Wilson’s release is insane he wins quickly almost every time.  I don’t know why people are making an argument ignoring Rodgers Wilson and Hall. Oh and the salary cap. Oh and free agents have the ability to say no thanks. This isn’t madden.

I don’t think the Jets will go “all in” the way you want them to, I think they want this to be sustainable. Adding Rodgers is certainly a dramatic move, but the Jets clearly needed a massive upgrade at QB and they went out and got the best one. I don’t believe they want to go the Rams route other than the veteran QB add. After next season, they’ll be back with a full slate of draft picks and a salary cap situation somewhat under control. Pricey names don’t make the difference if their production is no longer where it used to be, they’re just costly.

Savvy wire pickups, maybe a low-grade trade or two for particular players you’re interested in before they’re cut. You’re not the only person thinking this way, but I just don’t think JD has any plans to significantly alter his way of doing business; which has generally been pretty frugal.

I remember there was one draft that was supposed to be deep, where we had very few picks and the Pats were loaded up with extra picks.  Though tbf, the Pats were loaded with extra picks almost every year back then.

I just checked and possibly it was 2010.

Why is the 2010 NFL Draft considered the deepest draft in years?

If you look at Rodgers with Hack he throws to his favorite WR, and then RB and TE for the most part. Ruckert would be icing on the cake, not going to put him in the equation yet, but Uzomah or Ruckert is going to get a lot of targets

If you need to keep Rodgers, Wilson and  Hall out of your argument about the offense, what are you doing?

Awesome. Thank you, my english teacher.

Can we focus on the issue? JD hasnt added any notable playmakers to the offense.

You have to respect Mangini’s old school mentality.  He built the jets from scratch as the GM.

he doesn’t have a job now because youngsters in the nfl are too soft and wussified by wokeism
